Prenatal Vitamins and Sickness

Hi Everyone! I posted an intro a few weeks ago but am normally just a lurker.

I am 8 weeks pregnant today! And for the past two weeks I've had all day nausea after breakfast and taking my prenatal vitamin. It just hit me this morning that maybe it could be the vitamin causing the nausea, and of course, I was feeling great until I swallowed it again today.

I am taking Nature Made Prenatal plus DHA. Has this one affected your nausea before? Or any recommendations for a new one that you've had a better experience with?

TIA

I'm not as far along as you are and I've only had mild queasiness so far, but I typically take my prenatals right after dinner.  I find it's easier on my stomach if I'm full and then can lounge around a bit afterwards.

  • I had the same issue with FOLCAL DHA - My mid-wife asked how it was working for me and I told her that It was making me sick b/c bottle said to take on an empty stomach. She laughed and told me to take it with food then... I'd been suffering for 2 weeks!!!

Also, she told me that if it still bothered me to take 2 flintstone vitamins then take the DHA separate.... I also tried taking them different times of the day (at night, morning, afternoon) and found that just after lunch was perfect...

Hope  this turns out well for you!

  • I have this problem with EVERY vitamin I have ever taken. I find it easiest on my stomach to take them in the middle of my dinner, so my body absorbs everything with my meal, but it's late enough in the day that I can lounge around.

I'll try to do this next time perhaps! I guess from knowing I get nauseated afterwards makes me think it'll happen and keep me awake all night :/ But it's worth a shot :)

Yes! I always take mine with breakfast but that isn't cutting it. So I may use this advice if changing to dinner doesn't help. It was extremely hard taking that pill this morning knowing it would make me feel this way since I was feeling so great haha Thanks again!

  • I take your vitamin, OP, and when I forgot to take it one day, I felt great, and then miserable immediately after I took it. I'm calling my OB on Monday to see what I can take instead, at least for the first tri.
  • I had this problem and switched to taking them at night, right before I go to bed. I now sleep through any nausea they cause. Maybe give that a try?

  • I tried one a days for women just a regular multi and since I'm so tiny it's too much for me. He said to take gummies for children and it's worked out great.  Taking thr vita fusion gummies for prentals and no issues. :)

  • If the gummy vitamins don't work, my midwife gave me a prenatal with vitamin b and ginger.  They work well for me.  I also keep Gin Gin candy on hand although, the ones with "boost" don't seem to work as well for me.

  • Last time around, I tried three or four vitamins and was sick after each one. I eventually learned to take them at night right before bed. I also found that the target brand didn't make me want to gag when I took it. My OB said it had all the vitamins I needed and it's super cheap. GL!

  • Taking them right before bed always helped me.

This is what I do too. I also eat a light snack before bed just to make sure that there is something on my stomach. But, since I've started taking it at night it is much better.

  • I'm currently on prescription vitamins with extra folic acid & they make me sooo nauseous! On days when I just cant do it I take chewy prenatals by vitafusion. They're easier on my belly.

  • I take nature made with dha as well and I take it right in the middle or immediately after lunch.  On an empty stomach it makes me feel terrible!

I was taking mine right in the morning, and around week 8 they started to make me sick every morning! So my darling husband actually suggested to me the idea of taking them at a different time.  I have been taking them at night right after dinner and I've been feeling much better in the morning, I can actually get through my breakfast now!

  • I had that problem with DD so I ended up not taking them for the most part. So far this go round I am not taking Dr. prescribed going over the counter, I got Centrium Prenatal it's two smaller pills but I don't have nausea.
  • I take the same ones.  Everytime I've thrown up during pregnancy it was after taking the prenatal pill.  I've learned that I can only take it on a very full stomach.  If I take it after a meal of soup and bread - I get sick.  If I take 3 hours after a big meal - I get sick.  So I only take it when I'm home and can take it right after dinner.

Dr said I could supplement with a regular multi-vitamin or jsut a folic acid pill on days when I feel like I can't take (sometimes my morning sickness is so bad all I can get down is some soup for dinner).  I'm trying to find a multi-viamtin for women that has some extra folic acid already.

  • Yup. The iron in prenatals makes me sick. I take them before I go to bed. Hard to feel sick when you're sleeping.
