Baby Names

My 6 y/o is talking us out of the only name we agree on...

I'm not kidding.

It is sort of sad.

DH and I have extremely different naming styles. I prefer older classic names and he loves trendy. Our first son was named in honor of his paternal great grandfather, so no fighting there. I chose the name for son 2 since DH technically chose for son 1, but he liked the name fine so no trouble there either.

We can't agree on a name for our DD on the way. He thinks I choose old lady names (which I do) and he loves super popular names. (Like Isabella. When I mentioned it was the #1 girls name at the time, he replied that we would just call her Bella. *head bangs on wall*)

Charlotte seems to be the only name we don't hate. I was keeping it as our 'reserve' name, knowing we would probably end up going with it unless something else fantastic popped up in the next 6 weeks.

So I mentioned it to my 6 y/o and he hates it. Really, really hates it. I asked him why and he said that it sounded too close to the 'S' word and no one should have a name that reminds people of poop.

Although I obviously don't think Charlotte sounds like Sh!t, I can't really argue with his logic.

I can't believe I am seriously considering vetoing a name based on the opinion of a kindergartner. Tell me I'm crazy. Or suggest a replacement name ;)

I think Charlotte is beautiful. My nephew thinks my SIL should name her baby Wubzy (from Nick Jr.) lol he is 4. Kids are really silly sometimes!

  • Well it starts with a "sh" sound and ends with an "it" sound. So, I get where he's coming from.

I just really don't like the name, so I'd have to agree.

What about something like Olive, Ivy, Iris, Lenora or Veronica?

  • I think after having my son tell me that, it would be all I could think about. I know Charlotte doesn't sound like sh*t, but I do see where he got it from. Plus I probably wouldn't want my son to hate his sister's name even though it is not his decision. Even though he is 6, 6 year olds understand and know a lot more than people give them credit for at that age.

  • If you start saying and using the name more around him........he will end up accepting it and liking it. If you like it use it! He is a 6 year old for goodness sakes!

    This!!!

  • It's a great name. Don't let a 6 yo talk you out of it. If it were up to my 4 year old, her little sister's name would be Butterfly!

  • First of all, I love the name Charlotte! That being said, I do see where your son thinks it sounds like sh!t because of the beginning and ending sounds. I would have never put this together and thought Charlotte sounded like sh!t until this post, though. If you can, maybe put a list together of more names you and your husband agree on? If nothing else feels right, then I say go with Charlotte! And I'm sure your son won't have that association forever!

I really like old-fashioned names also, so some name suggestions are:

    Edith

    Eliza

    Ruby

    Ramona

    Etta

    Greta

    Margaret

    Violet

    Ida

    Millie

    Matilda

    HTH and GL!

  • Do not let a child influence you. If/when he says it, tell him it's not okay to think of his sister's name that way.

Even if you pick something else, its very possible he could say something negative about that one too.

  • Although I think the story is hilarious, I have to agree with some PP's on this. I wouldn't let my 6 yr old talk me out of a name, especially if it's the only one DH and I can agree on.

  • I'm a little disturbed that your 6 year old already knows the word sh!t...

Charlotte is so common. I'd go back to the drawing board.

  • At six, my favorite names were Chrystal, Star, and Heaven. I would not listen to a six yo.

  • Charlotte does not sound like sh*t, although I can see his point (as a six y/o).  I would stick with the name (you aren't really going to take his opinion on something so important, are you?) and say it frequently in front of him.  He will get used to it.

Sidestory:  when I was 5, my mom was pg with my sister.  Her name was supposed to be Laura Katherine.  This was decided almost immediately and up until a week before her birth.  I came up with some crazy story about how Laura was a bad name and the baby would think she didn't belong (siblings:  Lily, Rose, and Laura -- who doesn't belong? -- it wasn't really like that but similar lines).  My mother in her crazy pregnant state agreed with me (?!) and changed her name to my BABYSITTER'S name (which I clearly preferred).  My sister loves her name, it fits her perfectly, and hates the name Laura.  My mom still regrets her decision.

I can't believe she listened to a five year old.  I named my doll's after their hair colors (I was not an original namer) -- yellow baby, brown baby, red baby, etc.  Five years ago, my grandmother passed in her will she left "Laura Katherine" x items.  LOL sis, you were left out!

  • Charlotte doesn't sound anything like sh!t. I'd be ticked if my 6 yo said that and I don't think you should change your mind but you should watch him closely because he might call her that just to rebel.
  • It doesn't really sound like s**t, but I can see his point of view.  I'm also getting really tired of Charlotte at this point, it seems REALLY overdone.  That being said, if you and YH love it, go with it.  I prefer what I consider to be alternatives of Charlotte that aren't as popular, such as Cosette or Colette.

  • Yes you're crazy lol.

FWIW, I was 8 when my mom was pregnant with my younger brother (who we didn't know was a brother) and if he was a girl his name was going to be Holly. I cried and told her I hoped it was a boy just because Holly was such an awful name and I hated hated hated it.

It's now my favorite girl's name and #1 on the list for our DD on the way lol.

  • Dude, your kid should not carry such weight with his opinion. Does he like chicken every day? The same shoes? Activity? A 6 year old's opinion changes with the wind. If you are twisting yourself into knots over how your six year old feels about a new baby's name, then you need to take a step back. You are the mom & dad-- exercise some Parent-ocracy for Christ's sake. You sound crazy!
