Is anyone having sacroiliac joint pain in back?

I started having some stabbing pains in my back above my butt cheek this week and it hurts every time I walk, try to get up and down, climb stairs, etc. I looked online and it looks like it's my sacroiliac joint, which apparently is pretty common during pregnancy due to a combination of the pressure of the baby and the hormones released during pregnancy. I can't take any anti-immflamatories like Advil, and I am thinking about trying a combo of icing it and getting a medical massage. Has anyone dealt with this? I am going to ask at the doctor on Monday but their general attitude at this point seems to have shifted toward the baby and away from any discomfort I may be having...

  • Not sure how much a massage would help, but I started getting chiropractic adjustments for that same pain. I would take a step and gasp in pain because of the shooting, stabbing pain. It definitely made a difference to get the adjustments. Find a good chiro who can work on pregnant women and let him know what you're going through...they should be able to help you out, even at this point in pregnancy.

I think you have similar to what I do...  Again, chiro is only thing that helps.  I go once a week to maintain.  Some days it's awful, some it's fine, probably due to baby's position and hormone level.  I've had it going from my butt down my leg for ages.  Recently it's more like groin pain also on the right side.  At night it aches no matter which side I'm on.  I try stretching a lot (crossing ankle over to rest on opposite knee), have also heard you should keep your hamstrings stretched too...  GL

  • I only have problems going from a reclined or laying position and then I'm not sure I'm going to be able to get up.

I've been seeing a chiro too who specializes in Websters.  Websters goal is to straighten up the sacrum, which often gets twisted in pregnancy.  I knew it was beneficial during pregnancy, but he just explained to us this week what exactly it was he was doing.

  • I have pain - more in my mid-buttock than my spine. It the muscle tightening over the sciatic nerve and putting pressure on it. Hard to turn over in bed, walk, and climb stairs. I have been going for physiotherapy that includes myofacial release, and pressure points that REALLY helped. Also went to an MT for massage just on that area.

I forgot, I also wear my bump/back supporter any time I'm up and about.  It definitely helps keep things supported/feeling 'in line' back there...may be more than you want to spend this far along though?

  • I'm having the same issue and my dr gave me a Lidoderm patch to try ... it worked so she gave me an rx for it.  It works WONDERFUL and it's a category B so it's safe during pregnancy :)
