Hungry or fussy?

How do you know if your LO is hungry or just being fussy.  I feel like I feed him way too much but being hungry is the only thing I can find wrong with him.  I try changing him, burping him, giving him a paci but it always seems he just wants to eat.

He is 1 month and will eat 4 ounces every 2-3 hours which I feel like is a lot.  I don't want to overfeed him.  He doesn't spit up or anything so maybe he just has a big appetite.

  • a 1 month old will absolutely eat that frequently.

  • Its not so much the frequency that concerns me it is the amount he eats.  4 ounces every 2 hours seems like an awful lot to me.

I am fine feeding him as often as he needs but I just feel like he is eating too many ounces each feeding.

  • Sometimes when he's fussy he might just need a nap. I put lo down for naps now when I don't think he should be hungry but nothing will make him content. Usually I can get 30 min naps that way even if it's 10 min before his typical eating time.

  • My DS is the same age and doing the same thing, eating 4 oz every 2-3 hours and crying most of the time he's awake.  The problem is he won't sleep!  He's taken 2 short 20-30 minutes naps in the last 7 hours!  I know he is over tired-we tried white noise, swaddling, rocking, paci-nothing is helping!

rapaulson-how to you get your son to nap??

  • Yep, mine isn't napping either.  I can get him to lay down for maybe 10-20 mins but then he is awake and not very content.  Not exactly crying the whole time but not content either.  He is doing ok at nights usually but has bad ones here and there.

  • I think 3-4 oz every 2-3 hours is normal. Mine will sometimes want 5 oz, they sometimes go through growth spurts.
  • I think my lo has the same talent of falling asleep easily that I have! He usually just needs to be swaddled ( we use swaddle me wraps), turn on our sleep sheep on ocean, stick in a pacifier, rock until eyes get drowsy. Set him down in his crib and walk away. If crib fails, we also set him in bouncy chair on vibrate. Sometimes he only cat naps for 30 min but it's a nice reprieve.
