Would you color your hair while pregnant?

Ok I was good so far with not coloring my hair during this pregnancy and my plan was not to touch my hair until our baby boy arrives. But now with Baby showers coming and photos I feel kind of funny with half light brown and half blonde hair. I was thinking highlights but I don't really like going to hairdressers so sitting there for hours sounds not really fun for me and just simple coloring sounds better = faster. Did any of you color your hair while pregnant? Thank you for all your answers!!! I'm FTM of course.

Enjoy your day

Re: Would you color your hair while pregnant?

  • I wouldn't highlight, as it often contains bleach. No bleach and no ammonia AT ALL and make sure the space is well ventilated.

I have been using non permanent rinses since month 5. You can get these at natural stores or whole foods. Garnier has a more natural brand as well. It helps to even out hair hair color. My gray is out of control, and I had my SOs sisters wedding 2 weeks ago.

By 7 months, you should be OK. I had a conversation with my doctor  and my hair dresser, and they said the placenta filters anything that gets through, but your thick scalp skin does most of the work of not letting it in.

  • Everything I have read says that coloring is ok as long as the room is well ventilated.  I've even seen suggestions that it's better to do highlights than dying because the bleach isn't actually touching your scalp; it's usually applied close at your roots but not actually on the scalp.

That being said, I have dyed my own hair using the Garnier brand at about 6 mos.

  • I've had highlights done with both pregnancies. They are much safer than they used to be and highlights do not actually make contact with the scalp....

  • I would go get the highlights. Especially b/c you don't know what an at home box of color will do to your hair while pregnant. When I went in for a cut a couple months ago my hairdresser said that box color can be harsher b/c it goes all over your head and it's just one of those "made for everyone" formulas. I'm actually going to go around my b-day and get mine done since baby will be here about a month after that. My hair isn't too bad (it's so grown out,  but the bottom half is really dry though from the last at home box I used) but I wanted a cut and color before I had a ton of pics taken of me. It's honestly more to cover the grey that's all around my face Embarrassed

  • Highlights are ok--the foil keeps the color away from your scalp.  I just had my highlights done last weekend and I checked before I got them done.
  • I have with all of my pregnancies (this is my third) my OB said it was perfectly fine to color or highlight.  I just avoided coloring in the 1st trimester.

My pregnant hairdresser has given me highlights. She's worked through both her pregnancies, highlighting and colouring away all day.

Hilighting is actually ok because it does not make contact with any skin, it sits on the hair only with the foil tech ique

  • I had my hair highlighted a few weeks ago. I asked my OB first and he said it was fine.

  • I've colored my hair with the home hair dye stuff throughout both of my pregnancies.  My OB said it was fine as long as I could spend most of the time in a well-ventilated area.  So I apply the dye to my hair in the bathroom, which has crappy ventilation, then go sit in the living room with the fan on and/or windows open for the 25 minutes until I can rinse out the dye.

Well since I am a hairdresser and have been around color my whole pregnancy I would tell you that you will be just fine!  Highlight would be your best bet, for all the people who say try the rinses or Garnier its all natural no thats wrong all color I am sorry (other than henna) has so kind of peroxide in it and most not all but most do still have some traces of ammonia.  So if you are really worried dont but I can tell you I have been doing hair for 11 years and have worked with and on tons of pregnant women and not one child has come out with anything wrong with them.  Just dont huff the color :)
  • I used at home hair dye a few times already, my doctors only requirement was that I wait until week 16 to use the hair dye.

I felt better doing it at home because I was able to be in a very well ventilated area and shower immediately after the 20 minutes were up.  And I didn't have to worry about the chemicals from other hair products (bleach, several people getting hair dyed and possible acrylic nail chemicals)

  • My stylist will only do highlights on pregnant women's hair. As a PP stated, it doesn't touch the scalp and is safer. Which reminds me, I need to make my appointment. lol

  • I have gotten 3 single process dyes since being pregnant, and it will be 4 by the time LO is here. It is fine.

  • Yep, I did a full color and highlight at about 21 weeks to hide the grays for a couple weddings in June. Plan to color once more in late September or early October before baby is here.

I cleared it with my dr. and she said it was not an issue at all.

  • I made the biggest mistake ever and died my hair red sometime last september and can't seem to get it out. So once I found out I was pregnant I decided I will just let it grow out by chopping my shoulder length hair up to my ears and I've cut it every month since. Now it looks like I have upside down badly done ambre highlights because the top is dirty blonde and than it goes to an orangish color to a deep red blah.

As for dying it as others have said it its fine if it wasn't for me wanting to get rid of the red I would have died it a long time ago.

Yes This. My doctor said that highlights were fine since they are never directly on the scalp. I've highlighted my hair throughout both pregnancies.
