tore the skin that connects his lip to his gums

Ash caught his chin on the edge of the coffee table yesterday and appears to have torn the little peice of skin that connects his lip to his gum (inside the upper lip) and there appears to be cartilage or a tendon sticking out. I have an appt. at 9:45 tomorrow, but I wonder what we are in for. Has anyone experienced this before? I realize its probably unlikely, it a bit weird. Anyone with dental knowledge have any clue.

Cole just got hurt at my moms this week, same place as your LO. It wasn't as bad as it sounds like your little guys is, it healed okay without a trip to the dr and now it's just really puffy. I hope Ash is okay!!

  • Apparently that's pretty common (upper lip frenulum tears). My DS had his lasered at 5 weeks b/c it was too long and interfered with BFing. When I was doing research about it, I read that a lot of babies just naturally tear theirs. It's no biggie. Hope it heals and isn't hurting him too much!

It doesn't seem to be bothering him, but it looks creepy.

  • We just had DD's first pediatric dental appointment on Monday and the dentist mentioned to me that it's very common to tear that spot when children fall. He said to expect it to bleed a lot if it happens. He also said something about like if it doesn't get torn and you have a very pronounced one, it can result in a gap between your front teeth. It just so happened that DD fell the previous week and DH said he saw that hers was torn and there was a fair amount of blood right when it happened.

  • DS has one that comes down very low.  It has caused a big gap between his teeth.  My ped said DS will most likely fall as some point and split it and at that point put a lot of pressure on it because it will bleed a lot.  Pretty much all that pp's said.  I actually asked him if he cut it because it definitely looks like it is causing the gap in his teeth to be worse.  He said they do not do that.

  • This is a tear of the maxillary frenum.  It's very common and they don't do anything to fix it.  It heals nicely on it's own.

    Poor little guy :(

What about the cartilige or tendon sticking out? Is that normal?

no maybe I had a thick one bc mom said the doctors told her it was a good thing It had happened.
  • Went to the pedi this morning and she says he is fine. The white thing we though may be cartilage is actually connective tissue that tore and should heal up and reattach fine! It just looks weird on the mean time!

    Thanks for the responses ladies.
