switching doctors at 20 weeks...

I also posted this on 2nd tri...

I didn't have an OB before I was pregnant so I didn't know who to go with. I have decided the one that I went with isn't a good option anymore. My last 2 appointments with him were very frustrating...

The first appointment was at 16 weeks. I got in the room and he said "Let's go take a peek at the baby"...he has done this at every appt I have had with him. (I think he is just ultrasound happy...I didn't mind seeing baby either) While he was looking at the baby he asked if I had any questions and I said that I did. I asked him one and he goes "its too early for that" and then he said something about the baby moving. I figured that he would talk to me after looking at the baby so I let his lack of response go. After we were done looking at baby he washed his hands and said best wishes. I was too shocked to say anything and just walked out. I couldn't believe that he just dismissed my question and my symptoms. I figured I would give him one more chance after that....

At my 20 week appointment I was supposed to meet my dr at 3:45 and then have an ultrasound at 4. 4:00 rolls around and I am just finally getting called into the room. Weight, BP, and pulse were checked by my nurse. The dr opened the door and introduced himself to my husband. Then he said "weight and bp look good. Lets get you to your ultrasound" He didn't even come in the room and shut the door or ask how I have been doing or if I had questions. I know he was running behind and I had to get to my ultrasound, but don't you think he should have gave me a couple min or at least offered to give me an appt a diff day to make up for it??

I have decided to go with a different ob now. I have heard good things about him and have my first appt with him on Tuesday. I was in a car accident about 10 years ago and broke my pelvis and cracked my pubic bone. My new dr has already sent a request for those records just to be sure everything is ok. The old dr didn't even attempt to get those records even after I told him that I wanted him to check it out.

Anyway, the whole reason for this post is to hear what you ladies think. I am a little nervous about switching to someone new at this point, but I think I did the right thing...hopefully!

Re: switching doctors at 20 weeks...

  • I think you should definitely switch obs if your not completely satisfied.  You need to do what's right for you and your baby.  I will probably have to switch from my ob to a high risk ob ( I am kind of sad about this, but oh well)

  • I switched about a month ago and couldn't be happier!  My previous doctor was horrible!  New doctors are so much better.  You did the right thing!

  • Thanks ladies! I feel better with my decision now. I didn't want to be that crazy pregnant lady that can't make up her mind! That is kind of what I felt like! I can't wait for my appt Tuesday and I really hope it goes well!

  • The thing is, he could have had you go to the ultrasound, then come in and see him.

I'd be doing the same thing if my dr had done that at my last appt where she was running 45 minutes late (was her first day back from vacation & although she was apologetic, it was a very short appt - probably about 5 to 10 minutes, but she did check the baby's position & used the Doppler to check the heart beat, along with explaining what to expect appointment/bloodwork wise during the rest of the pregnancy since that's what my question was about.  Wonder what that doctor will try to bill for that "visit" ... I think I'd call the insurance provider to complain because if he truly didn't have time for you, could have rescheduled a real appointment after the quick check in.

Sounds like you've found a keeper though now!
