Pregnant after 35

(almost) starting over (two in their teens)

Hi!

I'm 41, with 16 and 13 year old daughters from my first marriage. I am just five weeks pregnant with my second husband (of 10 years). I'm super excited to be a new mom again, but aware of a different set of challenges than the first time around. Two incredibly active teens, a full-time job and an active homestead make this a different flavor/stage of life. Anyone else out there want to chat about it?

  • I am in a somewhat similar situation. I am 41 and a FTM, but have a 15 yo stepdaughter from my husband's first marriage.  For us, the situation is less difficult since she doesn't live with us full time, but it will still be interesting to see how we can balance a teenager and a baby.

  • I'm 36 and have an 11 year old and an almost 14 year old from my first marriage. This is my FI's first child.  I'm wondering how we are going to handle football season this year because both boys play and I'll be due to deliver right about that time.

I'm sure there will be some challenges and growing pains in the beginning, but I'm looking forward to having a baby to snuggle again.

  • Congrats. I will be 41 when this one is born. I have a 2.5 year old so cannot really relate to starting over. Good luck!

  • I can relate.  I have a 16, 14, and 12 year olds still at home and two grown and out.  will be 44 when this one arrives.  Guess I will learn to juggle schedules.  I am also excited did not expect to get this opportunity again.  I look forward to a LO again as I think I have more patience now and things are not as hectic and busy as they were when my other children were small.  Good luck to you and your family.
  • Congrats and welcome!  I am so encouraged every time I see someone else is my "boat".  I am 41 with a 15, 11, and 5 year old.  My husband and I were using birth control and thought we had our complete family but, I guess God has something else in mind.  It's been almost 2 weeks since I took that pregnancy test.  I felt like I was dreaming and then I thought I would have a panic attack.  It was just so shocking.  I am still experiencing a range of emotions but, am just trying to take things a day at a time.  Thank you, ladies for sharing your stories and your positive attitudes.  I feel like an irresponsible teenager and I don't have any idea how I will tell the people in my life.  My husband is a super laid back person and he just looks at me and giggles.  He is dealing with this a little better than I am.  :-) Looking forward to keeping up with y'all and sharing this journey with you!
  • I know how you feel! My son is now 12 and I am due to have a girl in January. This little one was a complete surprise for us but we are all very excited now. We had a CVS done on 7/12 with results coming back all ok. I wish you the best of luck on your new adventure and enjoy all of the cool new stuff out there for babies and mommies that we didn't have the first go round!!
  • I'm 37, and have a daughter that will be 15 this year, and now a 1 year old daughter and now this one in a few months. A certain start-over. I was working full time until January when my job was eliminated, so I'm a new SAHM. But staying at home has worn on me more than working outside the home ever did! Now I'll have 2 little little ones at home and all the fun activities my oldest daughter has going on keeping me super busy.

  • Welcome!

I am 38, and have an 11 (almost 12!) year old daughter from my first marriage.  Right now I am most nervous about breaking the news that her reign as an only child will be coming to an end.  I also work full time and attend graduate school part time.  Hopefully, we will figure out how to juggle everything before February! :)

  • Welcome to the club! :) I am 36 and will have a 19, 18 and a 16 yr old from my first marriage when LO arrives in a few weeks. I remarried 4 yrs ago and this is my second DH's first and we are all very excited!! :)

  • Wow, so great to hear from all of you! It will be a crazy juggling thing, I'm sure, but it will be fun and wonderful, too. I was a SAHM for most of my girls' pre-school years (until my ex and I divorced and I had to go to work). But this time I'll be the primary breadwinner AND the nursing mom, so I have a huge learning curve to ascend. Would love to continue hearing from you all as you move through the process and related transitions.

  • Not in your boat, but this sounds like a new and excitng journey.  I think this will a wonderful time for you and your family.  Good luck and enjoy your little cuddle bear!

  • I am in a very similar boat. I have a 14 year old DS and got married 2 years ago and am expecting in January.

DH and I had decided to not have children because he didn't want a child in college at the same time he was old enough to qualify for Medicare. I was fine with not having any more kids because I was enjoying the freedom that having a teenager gives you.

We are excited but sometimes I still wonder why we are doing this! LOL

  • Hi!

I am also 41 with an 18 yr old son and a 16 yr old daughter from my first marriage. I am ten weeks pregnant and still trying to wrap my head around how this happened.

There are certainly different challenges this time around and so many more resources...like the internet for one! I was a SAHM with my two previous but this time I will have to go back to work. That is really troubling to me but we will cross that bridge when we get there.

Next week I have my first trimester screening and NT screening which is new to me as well but with my age I figured it would be helpful. I had both my kids at home last time and don't see a reason so far to change that with this baby.

I have my moments of freak out still but overall I am more excited everyday. Breaking the news to the teenagers this week. That should be interesting.

But we are born to be happy, to be abundantly supplied with every good thing, to have fun in living, to consciously unite with the Divine Power that is around us and within us, and to grow and expand forever. ~Ernest Holmes BabyFruit Ticker
  • Hi, I'm 38 with 2 girls in college and a son ,sophomore in highschool... SURPRISE! My husbands reaction was actually very positive! Yes I work and have been very accustomed to coming and going as I please... I'm not sure how I'll cope with owning my own business and having to put in the time and energy because I'm a very busy lic. Massage therapist.. Just thinking of the sleepless hours... But I am VERY excited for our new princess's arrival :)
  • Hello!

I am 41 and have two boys ages 12 and 9 from my previous marriage. My fiance and I have been together 7 years, 3 pregnancies but no kids. This will be his first. I am still very risky right now and will find out today if pregnancy is viable. I am 8 weeks. I am looking forward to having my kids as little helpers if I have this baby. Last time my older one was so little and still dependent on me. Should be interesting. Very different this time around.

  • I know what you are going through. i am fifteen weeks six days, with my second.  i am thirty eight and have a fourteen year old.  i dont know about you but my body isnt the same as it was when i had my daughter. more aches and pains and definitely more tired. i am nervous about everything right now and cant wait to get to my next check up to make sure everything is okay.  goodluck with your pregnancy and congratulations.
  •  We have been married for a year I am 43, he's 42 and  our blended family consists of my kids 19, and 15 and his 18, 16 and 11 all of whom live at home. Now I am preganant again after trying for two years and all kinds of procedures we did in au natural. We havent told our kids or anyone else yet but I am really concerned about how they will all feel about it since they just gained siblings through marriage and now here's another.  My 15 year old daughter and I are very close and she already feels crowded by the three new kids in her life.  I am hopeful that it will all work out okay.
