Can i have a margarita? (also on breastfeeding board)

I was wondering if i have one margarita with my dinner if i have to pump and dump or if i am not feeling the effects of the alcohol then can i breastfeed? I pumped this morning so i have some for a bottle after dinner tonight for DH first bottle feeding anyway... What are your thoughts?

Another note is that i would have a small glass of wine throughout pregnancy, just not sure if the tequila in a margarita will be too potent and last longer in my body...

  • I was told by my LC that as long as you are not feeling theeffects of the drink and you drink right after you do a feeding you will be fine. If you do feel the effects to pump and dump.

If you are safe to drive, you are safe to BF. No need to pump and dump, alcohol leaves the breast milk as it leaves your system. It helps if you don't think of your breasts as "resevoirs" of milk, but as a constant production. Your milk only has as much alcohol in it as the rest of your body, and it enters and leaves at the same rate.

Cheers! I had my first post-pregnancy 'rita last night!

  • you can buy alcohol test strips at like walmart so you can test your milk and make sure that its okay.
  • alcohol leaves breast milk the same way it does blood. 1 drink per hour. If you stick to this rule, there's no need to buy test strips, or pump and dump. Enjoy that margarita lady! I had my first one last week and it was amazeballs !lol

  • Alcohol is actually typically in your blood for about 24 hours to 72hours. Depending on your metabolism. I would do the strips to make sure. It might take a couple pumps and dumps. It all depends on the person though. My friend courtney who has a speddy metabolism had it in her breast milk for the whole night until about 10 the next morning after her drink. She had the test strips to check it
  • I suggest using the test strips. You can even buy them on Amazon if you can't get to the store. BRU and walmart sell them by me. I suggest them because I use them and have had a positive result even though I didn't feel the effect of the drink. You don't have to pump and dump because with time, the alcohol will leave the milk. But if you are feeling like you are going to burst or you end up having one too many, pumping and dumping helps keep production flowing and you more comfortable through the day/night!
