Drinking cow's milk is "unnatural"?!

So I found out a lot of information about a friend of mine day, and I'm honestly not sure how the two of us can be friends.  First, I found out she is a non-vaxer, which is frustrating b/c her son (14 months old) has spent a ton of time with R.  She should have told me.  Second, she believes that drinking cow's milk is unnatural and humans have no busines drinking it or using it for cooking/baking.  Her son is in the 5th percentile of weight for his height and age, and the pedi recommended that he drink a few glasses of whole milk daily to help give him extra healthy calories.  She refuses to allow it.  I guess she's looking for other more "natural" ways to give him more calories, but she when she was telling me about it, she kept going on and on about how unethical and unnatural it was to be drinking the cow's milk.  She was super judgey, and it made me uncomfortable.  To each their own on diet, but don't lecture/judge me.  I'm also really upset about the whole non-vac. thing (not to bring up another controversial topic that has been discussed ad nauseum), so maybe I'm just looking for other reasons to sever friendship ties.

Re: Drinking cow's milk is "unnatural"?!

  • I'm far from a non-vaxer and I do consume dairy. I love dairy. But I think humans are the only mammal that consume milk into adulthood- and the milk of another animal, at that. So I can understand the argument that it is unnatural but I don't think that necessarily means it's BAD. Lots of things we do are unnatural. Lots of bad/unhealthy things (arsenic, botulism) are natural.

  • People like that really bug me. No need to go into the non-vaxing thing any deeper, cause I am sure I have made myself clear on that topic several times.

But now cow's milk? Really? Well, natural is probably a question of definition. Since you are not a calf going up to an **THIS IS SPAM** and taking some sips, it is probably not as natural as some people would like it to be. But well, it has been done for thousands of years and people thrive on cow's milk and like it. If I couldn't drink milk in this pregnancy, I would really fall short on calories. Not just healthy calories, just calories in general. I am having an awfully hard time getting what I need this time around, and now one of those healthy sources of goodness and calories is not natural? Give me a break.

I don't think you need to look for reasons to sever those ties......I think they are pretty much already obvious. What a nut job.

  • Actually cows milk isn't ideal for humans to drink, other animals milk more mimics humans. Cows are just easier to obtain milk in large quantities. Toddlers and kids get healthy fats for their brains from it. There are plenty of other ways to get healthy fats in someone. She sounds like she's being obnoxious about it and I wouldn't be friends with a nonvaxer either.
  • I would be furious about the non-vaxing. It's her deal she thinks cow milk is unnatural but I'm pretty sure people have been doing it since humans and cows were around each other.

  • I mean, generally goats milk is easier to digest and horse milk is supposedly a lot closer to human milk - and has like a billion healing properties and such. But the judgyness of this just bugs me. I like milk. It is good for me. Don't bash it.

Yeah, that's what bugged me the most.  I'm all for to each their own, except in situations where someone else's choices affect me (ahem, non-vaxing), but I can't stand the judginess.

This. The amount of cows milk that is recommended from 1-2 years frankly skeeves me out, which is why I choose to EBF. But I certainly am not loud and biitchy about it, and if a doctor told me my child needed it I wouldn't say another word.

    Eff those non vaxers.

  • I heard that goat's milk is closer to human milk.  Does anyone know if this is true? Clearly I'm too lazy to google it for myself.

I've heard this before, but I can't imagine that its true. I would assume that cows, horses, goats, etc are all about equi-distant from humans as far as milk composition. I'm not trying to pick at you, Nita. I'm just wondering where people got this idea from (I'm assuming a goats milk salesman). I don't think it has a real, scientific basis, but I could be wrong.

ETA: I'm interested in this topic because DH got into a fight with a goat cheese vendor at our local farmers market. The woman tried to tell him that goat cheese was healthier than cow cheese, and he (being a scientist AND and azzhole) asked her for data to back her claims  :)

There is actually difference in composition and proteins among the species, which accounts for why one might be tolerated better among those with allergies or intolerance.

On a funny note, I was curious about any specific scientific literature and found this little gem on PubMed:

Ass's milk in children with atopic dermatitis and cow's milk allergy: crossover comparison with goat's milk

     https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18001430

Ass milk is better tolerated and more effective than GM in reducing symptoms of Atopic Dermatitis

So there you go, ASS MILK is best.

I get the unnatural part, no other species drinks another's milk by nature. I have heard people saying it is unnatural a lot. I personally don't drink milk because I find it gross (taste wise). There are other ways to get fats and calories then from milk.

Sure, I understand that the specific proteins in each species' milk are slightly different (i.e., casein from the cow might be slightly different from casein from the goat). That could certainly have an impact on allergies.

But people often suggest that the nutrient content is better in one v. another. That's what I wasn't sure about.

I'll be sure to use ASS milk from now on!

Lol! I hear pigs milk is actually great and they are working on making cheese from it but apparently pigs are mean when they're lactating so it's hard to get milk from them. Certain milks are healthier because of the amount of fat/cream. E refused to drink cows milk (and a lot of foods) until not that long ago so I had to do a lot research in milk (and other food) substitutes.

No worries, I don't feel picked on.

I know about the goat's milk thing actually from studying history - there are several accounts, reaching as far back as 800 AC that goats milk was used for babies who couldn't get breastfed and didn't have a wet nurse. They were thriving on it,too. As that got me intrigued, I checked it out and there are several studies supporting those early findings. One of them was done at the Berlin Charite, which is somewhat the most prestigious German hospital.

As for mare's milk, it is a similar thing. I know it is used in a lot of cosmetics back home for people with allergies. Apparently there is also some kind of research going on as for healing properties in auto immune diseases. That is not even close to scientific jut yet though. However, having grown up on a horse farm, I know that lots of people would inquire to buy milk - cancer patients among them - and some of them were feeling better during chemo and swore up a d down it's because of the milk.

Now, I am not a scientist and I suck in natural sciences as a whole, so forgive me if I totally butcher this, but I believe I have heard that goats milk in particular is a lot closer in it's protein base and it's amino acids to human milk than cows milking therefor it is easier digestible and the body can break down and use it better. If that is not making sense, then blame me, don't dismiss the fact - I just cannot explain it well.

  • When I was young, I started thinking about drinking cow's milk and somehow came to the conclusion it was gross, dispite my family being big milk drinkers.  I remember as a teenager dramatically declaring, "Why would I want to drink the bodily fluids of another species of animal?".  Lol.  That's teenage extremism, I suppose.

I married a big milk drinker and we've always been back and forth on the subject, so when I wasn't able to breastfeed like I wanted to and had to suppliment with formula, I was devistated.  The adult in me doesn't like all of the hormones, antibiotics and other supplements that are put in cow's milk, so I had to find the most organic of formulas to help supplement.  Since soy has large amounts of estrogen, that wasn't an option.  Cow's milk formula it is!

I think there is something to what your friend said.  Sure humans have been drinking animal milk for thousands of years, but now we have supermarkets and alternatives.  I do, however, think your friend sounds like she needs her soapbox kicked out from underneith her.  I may feel the way I do about milk for me, but only my closest of friends and some family even know.  I think whoever mentioned it previously was right, you probably already knew she wasn't a great friend for you.

ETA- sorry for writing about myself more than I wanted to in the quick reply I had inteded on posting.
