Is it ok to pre-make bottles of formula?

I am weaning from BFing and so I currently only get foremilk when I pump two times a day at work. (I am only pumping 5 min, twice a day) So, I am going to start mixing my BM with formula, but I feel like this is going to be way to much work for daycare. Can I send her with pre-made formula/BM and have them store that ya think? Or, if I leave bottles for DH, can I leave the pre-made bottles in the fridge and have him warm those for LO? I am just an EBFer so I am not super up on the formula protocol. I don't see why I couldn't pre make the bottles, but thought I would check.

Also, what's up with formula in a can? Once you open it, do you have to use it within like 2 days? Do you store it in the can in the fridge or is that a case where you would store the milk mixed with water in bottles?? (got some from the doctor as a sample..)

  • Yes you can do that as long as formula is used within 24-48 hours or something like that. Look on the back of your formula container and see what it says.

  • Powedered formula - can be made up to 24 hours in advance ( I make 5 bottles in the morning to be used throughout the 24 hours)

ready to feed (in a can) has to be used within 48 hours of opening, stored in fridge after opening. Before it's open it's fine at room temp for quite a while (check the date)

  • You can premake bottles and store in fridge for 24 hours. I've done it on occasion.

The powdered formula will last a month after being opened but the ready to feed or concentrated kinds need to be used w/ in 24 hours.

This, but RTF cans (once open) need to be stored in a container or bottle, NOT stored in an open can.

  • As much as I hate to be the BPA police again...   Please be careful with canned formula the lining of the can is made with BPA a toxic chemical, an is released into the milk.   It is found in almost all canned products including soda and is especially bad in soups.   It mimics the estrogen hormone and is very bad and I wish it was banned.  It is also in lids of glass (baby food) jars (the white lining).

The amount in canned formula is small but I would still avoid it as much as possible.  We still use canned once in a blue moon in the case of emergency (no clean water available).  But I wouldn't use it very often, that's for sure!

This kind has to be mixed with water, so technically it is not RTF, it must have water added.
