Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

WWYD

Ok, this might be a little long just stay with me. DH left about 2 weeks ago for deployment. He is national guard so he goes for trainup first and then goes across seas. He gets a pass near the end of august when I can go down and see him for 4 days. Originally we didn't plan on DD(17 months) coming because its a 5 hour flight plus a 1.5 hour layover and then another 1 hour flight. He misses her so much that now I'm reconsidering.

The thing I'm most scared of is the flight. I have no idea how she will handle it. She usually doesn't sit still for more then 5 minutes at a time.

So, what would you do? Have you flown with LO around this age? Any advice?

Re: WWYD

  • Can you afford a seat for your LO? My DD is incredibly active and rarely sits still. I have always bought a plane seat for her, and strapped her in her car seat. There is something to be said about being able to strap the LO down on the plane. I always make sure to bring lots of activities... books, coloring, ipad, snacks, etc to keep her entertained. Plus, your LO is a lot safer in a car seat too!

  • I was thinking that I would strap her in the carseat since I will need it when we get to our destination anyway, but I have been looking around and a lot of people say that having the open seat worked good for them. I would definately get her her own seat.

  • we flew. I did not buy a seat but if the flight is not full you get one. I brought it and 3 out of 4 flights she got her own seat. It wasnt easy but it wasnt terrible. She just liked to hear her own happy screams a lot on the flight :/
  • Well here is my experience... So i think if I made it alive, your should be ok too. LOL.

Being that I currently got out of the Army from Germany, I had to take a 10 hour flight with my 19 month old and being pretty far in pregnancy.

    Things you should know...

1.) Get them their own seat if you can.

2.) You can use your stroller all the way up until you board the plane, the flight attendants will take your stroller and have it waiting for you as soon as you get off of the plane at your new destination.

3.) Carseat was a lifesaver. (I used the stroller as a baggage carrier more or less! lol.

4.) iPad was an even bigger life saver. I don't know what I would have done without it! I downloaded a massive ton of new toddler apps for her to play with. So it was like a bunch of new toys.

5.) Bring stickers, colors, and coloring books.

6.) If you have a window seat, they make window markers that easily wipe off.

7.) MAKE SURE TO BRING EXTRA CLOTHING (I don't know how in the world I forgot but I did... and the last 10 minutes of our 10 hour flight she threw up... exorsist style!)

8.) Bring Lots of snacks (crackers, rice crispies, suckers, string cheese)

9.) If a long flight, pack an extra little meal like a sandwhich and fruit cup. On my 10 hour flight they only fed us once... and one snack. So she probably threw up from all the junk food I was feeding her to hold her over.

10.) Bring zip locks incase baby does throw up, you have somewhere to store dirty clothes without the smell seeping out.

AND finally... with only an hour and a half layover... you'll be lucky to make your flight. I was in a horrible panick! When I landed in Atlanta the customes line was beyond... rediculous... I can't even explain. I would have missed my flight is someone hadn't informed me that there is a family line for anyone who has children under two. This line was quick! Most airports have them so use them. and by no means, do not be afraid to ask for help!

But since you're taking a 5 hour flight, I think you should be fine. Alexa didn't sleep for an entire 24 hours. It was horrifying. But we survived. Lol.

I think you should take him with you, it should be a ton easier for you I think. My circumstance was just bad all by itself.
