Dog people...help!

So this morning I woke up to find my dogs nose/muzzle swollen. I heard her scratching during the night but didn't think anything of it.  She must have been bitten by something.  Has this happened to anyone else?  She's acting normallly so I gave her some benadryl. The swelling hasn't gone away much at all since I gave it to her about 2 hrs ago. She's breathing fine and eating normally.  I'm not sure if I should take her to the vet.

Since it's been 2 hours and you haven't seen improvement, I would call and talk to the vet.  I would imagine that the benadryl should've done something by now.

  • I called the vet and they seem to think I should bring her in to be on the safe side. I love my dog but money is tight right now. So that's why I'm struggling with taking her or not. Of course I can't put a price on her life so I'll have to bite the bullet and take her.

  • my dog's muzzle swelled up after licking a flea treatment (not frontline) off herself. She had a reaction to it. Have you washed your dog recently or has she gotten any treatments? Could she have rolled in something and licked it off?

I agree, call your vet and ask their opinion. In our case, we knew what caused it and our vet didn't have us bring her in. It went down by the next day.

  • I would also call the vet and see what they at least say.  I hope poochy is back to himself shortly.

No she hasn't had any treatments like that. I did take her to the vet 2 weeks ago to get a flea/tick dip because they have infested our yard. Other than that I have not put anything on her. I am thinking it was probably a spider because I do remember (although I was asleep at the time) hearing her kind of scamper around all of a sudden and then she started scratching. After a minute she calmed down so I didn't get  up.

Could be a reaction to flea bites, my poor shar-pei can have bad reactions to the little buggers. Unfortunately this year they're terrible too because it didn't get cold enough to kill them all last winter.

  • My boxer is allergic to everything, and swells up like a balloon atleast once a month. We dont have a vet in this crappy town, so the nearest is 3 hours away.. anyways, after numerous emergency trips, costing a butt load, we asked the vet if he could give us something stronger then benadryl, as benadryl doesnt work. He perscribed us 6 cortizone (sp?) It cost 30  bucks compared to the gas money/visit to the vet. Maybe your vet could give you something liike that for next time, just in case?

    Ha, sorry I babbled.
