When did you start EC?

I never was very enticed by the concept of Elimination Communication when I heard about it from my other natural/gentle/AP leaning friends. But my husband & ILs are from India, where the norm is to start putting a baby on a mini-toilet for a few minutes a day starting anytime between 4-6 months. They were and are shocked to hear that in the US, kids are in diapers til age 3.

It's starting to sound more appealing to us now that I heard my aunt-IL describe how she did it with her children. So we got a little mini-seat and I have a sense of how we'll go about it, but still not sure on the timing. Our daughter is 7 months - have any of you started this early? We were thinking of starting around 9 months, but perhaps we can start now. Any experienced thoughts? Thanks!

  • I started my daughter at 1. I know in India and other countries alike that is still considered late but by 18 she was completely day trained, mostly night trained and was wearing regular panties. By 2, completely trained. I think it's awesome and makes since. Our bodies arent made to go on ourselves. When my son is born, I'll probably start him the same way. At least getting him used to go pee by recognizing his body's cues. It's dedication but can be done effectively.

  • With our second we started at 3mo.  With our third we started at 2wo.  With our fourth we started the day after birth.  This time I'll probably start on birth-day if it's not too late in the day.  Start first thing in the morning and after naps (this is especially useful if you get to her immediately upon waking, not 5 minutes later so she hasn't had a chance to pee/poop yet).  Then we started adding in before and after going places.  And then we started adding in whenever we'd change a diaper.  My 2nd was out of diapers 100% at 19mo (though she was ready 2mo before that, I was just too nervous about naps/bedtime/trips out), my 3rd was out of diapers 100% at 20mo.  My 4th isn't as interested.  She's 18mo with a lot of misses still, so she might be a little longer.

  • We started somewhere between 8 and 12 weeks.

Check out the book Diaper Free Baby for helpful info on things to consider when starting at different ages. It is a great book!

  • DD was 2 weeks old when we started.

  • Wow, some of you started before your babies could even sit! I guess ours isn't too young by that standard then. Maybe we'll start over the weekend & see how it goes. She's definitely giving easy to read signs nowadays - she grunts when bearing down.

We started at 13m, which puts us in the "longest time til trained" range. :P
