Natural Birth

advice on having a calm birth

I am an ftm and I've always wanted a calm birthing experience. I never imagined myself in excruciating pain, crying and screaming! I want this birth to be a beautiful experience as women were meant to have. What advice can you give me on having a calm birth? what techniques worked for you? I understand you can't just get rid of the pain but I know that you can control it :)

Re: advice on having a calm birth

  • Have you read the hypnobirthing books? There's a couple of different ones, not sure which is more popular, but they have good ideas on ways to stay calm. Worth a read even if you don't want to fully follow the method.

Basically I just go to a very quiet place when I'm in pain, and that's how I was in labour too. So I think part of your behaviour/response is about how you deal with pain/stress generally.

In terms of the actual pain, hot water was great for me. Massage was ok, but the bath and shower were the best things.

This was me too. I knew before having a baby that when I am under stress I like quiet and not a lot of people around. I was very calm for my labour with DS and only got screamy the last 10 mins (had a very fast pushing phase).

Think about how you react to stress and then build a labour environment that allows you best to deal with it.

  • If you want to stay calm, stay calm.  I can tell you from personal experience that birth can be both calm and quiet.  I don't think I said much of anything the first time around, there was certainly no crying or screaming, no Hollywood sweating and yelling "I can't do it!".  No.  I counted my breaths and concentrated on slowing that (my breathing) down.

I don't think you can control the pain.  What you have control over (maybe) is managing your reaction to the pain.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • With my previous births, i wanted to be comfortable and have quiet.  I labored at home until my contractions were like 4 mins apart.  I best tip i ever got was to keep my eyes open through every contraction.  When you close your eyes, you focus on the pain and keeping your eyes open allow you to focus on other things.

I got Hypnobirthing to read for this time around.  At first i was just interested in getting a few tips. After reading it, I signed up for the classes and I am totally into it.  They claim you can have a pain free birth.  I would 100% recommend you read it.

  • The best advise I can give you is if you want a calm birth, be calm. I know that sounds a little strange, but you can really control how your feeling and knowing that can be surprisingly powerful. I had a completely med free birth (not even a hep lock) and I was doing a puzzle up until I hit transition. I didn't study any techniques or anything and I sat in the bed the whole time because that's what I wanted to do. I tried standing and hated it. Just go in knowing that you know how to do this and your body will do the rest.
