Cradle Cap

Maybe this should be my FFFC. I'm embarrassed to say that DD still has cradle cap. I've always followed the philosophy of "don't mess with it. It will go away on it's own". Obviously, that's not the case. I've read to use Anti-dandruff shampoo or Olive Oil and scrub it in and wash it off. I'm afraid I'll get it in her eyes! Any other ideas or suggestions?!

Re: Cradle Cap

  • when she had it when she was little I just used california baby calendula cream, rubbed it into her head and then combed in the opposite direction of the flakes to pull them off. Worked pretty quickly!

Olive oil or coconut oil would work fine, I wouldn't worry about it getting in her eyes, you're just rubbing in a tbs or two on her head, not pouring half a bottle on her?

  • DD has it too. She was fine for a while, then her hair got thick and I didn't realize she had it until I started putting her hair in a pony tail. I need to get rid of it

Yeah, use olive oil. It will probably work. The pedi told me to use it, let it sit 15 minutes, and then massage it really good, and comb it really good. She also said to scrub really hard when I shampoo his hair, and not to be afraid of his soft spot, which obviously he was like a month when she told me this lol.

I did it, and it went away, and I even got to get a picture of baby's first comb over in the process hahaha

  • We used olive oil on V for months.  I would rub it on (thinly) and let it sit for an hour or so before his bath.  Then I would use a soft sponge to rub it during his bath.

We use regular unscented Dove soap on V for all baths.  It is not "tear free" so I am careful to not suds up on his face too much.  To rinse his hair I lay him down in the bathtub so the runoff doesn't go in his eyes and use a soft-sided cup to rinse.  This method might help with the dandruff shampoo too.

  • Our pedi told us to use regular adult Cedephil body wash on Em's head and body instead of baby products because the no tears I greediest is drying. We have been using it since she was about 6 months, and Em cleared up right away and has been since. We bought the expensive one first time becauseit is stronger. It is just running out and now the pedi said to just buy the regular version and the generic one from Walmart. It only costs $4.99, but the first one we bought was $17.99. It was still very worth it.

  • We used Head and Shoulders on DS and it went away.
  • DS still has some on the top of his head. I didn't notice at first because he has so much hair. I am kind of afraid to scrub hard because of the soft spot, but maybe I'll try the olive oil.

  • DS still has Cradle Cap as well.  I have also done the leave it alone approach. It doesn't seem to bother him or get any worse.  I suppose one of these days, I ought to do something about it.

We used olive oil and it went away pretty early on.

  • It could be eczema, not cradle cap. J has eczema all over, including his scalp. His allergist told us to use the Nuetrogena t-gel once a week until it was gone and then only to wash his hair once a week. We maybe did it for 5 weeks and it has never come back.
  • Mine still has it too. I took her to Pigtails and Crewcuts for a haircut and asked if she usually sees kids this old with cradle cap.  She laughed like it was nothing- she said she sees it as old as 3-4.
  • We used good old vaseline. I would massage it onto their scalp and then use a baby comb to get the stuff off. I would then give them a bath & shampoo with J&J and it would be gone. It came back once & I just repeated the same process.

  • I just really attacked DD's a couple months ago (with all her hair it was hard to see but I noticed when I pulled her hair up).  I used olive oil, left it on for a while and then scrubbed well.  I did this very intently for a couple days and each time had to wash her hair with shampoo 2-3 times after so it wouldn't be oily.  We didn't have any problem with it getting in her eyes.
