If you have had Misoprostol/Cytotec....

How does it compare to natural contractions? Is the pain worse, not as bad, or just different? Or does nothing really feel different? I really don't want any sort of induction/augmentation, and it's not routine with my MW, but I would still like to know how the pain compares. Everyone agrees Pit's worse, but there seems to be little info on Cytotec. TIA.

Re: If you have had Misoprostol/Cytotec....

  • I had to have both cervadil and cytotec before pitocin was started. The cervadil and cytotec didn't do much to cause contractions but did cause me to dilate. It was the pitocin that really started the contractions. The only side effect I had from the cervadil and cytotec was cervical sensitivity. It got to be so bad that when the doctor was doing internal checks, it felt like she was stabbing knives into me and I was hysterical. I took the epidural just to get away from that pain. It was awful.

  • As I understand it, miso/cytotec is actually not intended for use with cervical ripening (although it is used). I would choose Cervadil. I have used miso before, but it was when I had a missed miscarriage and it was used to cause me to pass the baby. My cramps/contractions were extremely painful.

This is my understanding as well. It's discussed in Ina May Gaskin's book and, no matter the bias, it scared me enough to not want it.

I also went with cervadil and was lucky enough to go into labor while it was inserted. My mw warned me the contractions may stop when it was removed, but they didn't.  I believe they were a pretty natural progression.

  • Just throwing in there that I agree with PPs who said they wouldn't accept Cytotec. Not only is it not meant for use as a cervical ripener, it actually says ON THE LABEL that it should not be given to pregnant women. I totally get it that a lot of off-label use of drugs happens, and I'm fine with that, but I wouldn't allow them to give me something that specifically says it shouldn't be given to pregnant women.

And the company has sent out letters telling OBs not to use it.  No way is it coming anywhere near me!

This is why I asked. This is the experience I had @ about 9 weeks pregnant several years ago and wanted to know if labor will be anything like that. I'm not stupid, I'm actually medically educated myself, this is just my only experience with any kind of labor. I was young and unaware of what Cytotec was, and do not want it again, now that I know what I do.

  • So are you looking for a comparison with pitocin?

No, I've never had Pit. I was wondering how the cramping/contractions relate to true labor pain. When I was given Cytotec, the cramping was terrible. I was also terrified and alone, so that didn't help. Since that was my only experience with any sort of labor-type pain, I was wondering how it relates. Is Cytotec worse, easier, or just different?
