I'm glad I'm well within safe range for my GD test. In fact, I tested quite, quite low. I didn't expect that, given that diabetes runs in my family.
But I also didn't expect to be diagnosed with anemia. All this time I've been complaining of being dizzy and tired and having an unusually hard thumping heart. No one thought to say it might be anemia. ..
Well, I have to take a script called Slow FE at a time other than my prenatals and far away from consuming anything containing calcium. I've heard that iron supplements can make you quite sick. anyone had experience with slow fe? is this something to take before bedtime?
Re: GD? No. But they did find anemia...
I've taken OTC iron supplements before, but not slow fe. I always took it at night with a snack or after dinner. I never had problems with it, but I have heard that it can make some people sick if they take it without food.
Sorry that I can't be more help.
Ditto. My OB recommended any iron supplement so I picked one up at Walmart. She said to be sure to take it with food because it may upset my stomach.
Something else to mention -- if you like grits (Yes, I'm Southern through and through), Quaker Instant Grits (Butter Flavored) has 45% of your daily recommended iron intake (and only 100 calories per serving!) I've added those to my menu and have noticed a huge energy difference
i LOVE grits. actually had some for breakfast yesterday. I didn't even think to check the nutritional side of the box. Great idea. Tx.
I also tested anemic and they put me on Slow FE. Made sense when I thought about how I've been tired almost constantly despite getting plenty of sleep.
My doctor said to take it with 500mg Vitamin C supplements or a cup of orange juice; I believe that's to lower the chances of constipation. I take it in the morning with my prenatal, but I do make sure to take them AFTER I've had some food; otherwise it makes me feel nauseated.
However it did cause some *ahem* bowel issues. Said issues might make it less than ideal to take at bedtime, depending on what side effects you get. Read about the side effects here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_supplement
