Trouble TTC

IUI Question

I've read the studies and seen the statistics that say that after 3 IUIs the chance of pregnancy drops significantly.

However, does the 3 IUI rule count if you change the meds?  For example, say I did 3 IUIs with Clomid and then went on to do 3 IUIs with Femara, would the subsequent IUIs after the 3rd one have extremely poor chances or would the percentage go back to the original number since I would be on different meds?

Just curious, because I'm wondering how many more times I should try IUI with Clomid before moving on to a different med.  I really would like to try all other options before moving on to IVF.

  • I just had my IUI consult this morning and was handed a big IUI statistics sheet as part of the packet.  I don't have it with me now, but from what I remember, the stats go down with each IUI, regardless of the meds.  Definitely ask your doctor, but from what I know, if IUI doesn't work the first three times, your chances of it working on the fourth, fifth, sixth, etc. time aren't great.  Doesn't mean it can't happen though.  Good luck!
    TTC #1 7/10, Me (31)- Dx DOR (AMH 0.6); DH (30)- normal
BFP on Cycle #8. Natural M/C at ~8 weeks
    IUI #1 and #2 (8/12, 9/12)- 50 mg Clomid + Ovidrel = BFNs
    IVF #1 (EPP) 13R/10M/9F, 5DT 1-4AA blast, beta #1-148, beta #2-322, 5 frosties!

You are correct. Mine doesn't even want me to waste time on a 3rd IUI if IUI#2 doesn't work because he thinks it would be a waste of money that could be used towards IVF.

Yeah, mine said max 3, and he'd move on to IVF after 2 if we wanted to.  Good luck on IUI#2!
