Baby Names

CP: Linnea

I love the name Linnea for a future DD and my only concern is that it will often be pronounced wrong. I feel that those who aren't familiar with the name will sound it out as Lynn-ee-ah, while I prefer the pronounciation Lynn-ay-uh. So my question is how would you pronounce it? Is there a better spelling to achieve the pronunciation I want?

  • I like it a lot. It's on my list of science-y names for girls. I wouldn't change the spelling to accommodate pronunciation. You may have to correct people, but no big deal.
  • I first saw it and pronounced it Li - nee - uh. I keep thinking it has a long i sound.  I'm not sure how you would change the spelling to get the "a" sound in the middle. Lynneah is probably the spelling that would get me to say it correctly but people might accuse you of making up the spelling.

  • It's interesting to me that Linnea is a "weird" name to the pp.

Granted I live in a huge Scandanavian area but Linnea is a fairly common if not popular name here. I love it!

This. I love Linnea and would consider it for another girl if it weren't too close to DS's name. The spelling is faithful to the origin; please don't change it. (And as for linea nigra, the reaction of a group of women who are obsessed with pregnacy symptoms is probably not representative of the general population.)

    This x1000, it's a beautiful name.

  • It looks like you just misspelled linea. As in, linea nigra. That's all that comes to mind.
