My daughter was born 5 days ago. She ha taken on to breast feeding very well but seems to be eating a lot - almost too much. We said this to the doctor and the doctor said babies can never eat too much. I believe this but before I feed her I always change her diaper to wake her up and 90 percent of the time I have to clean a poopy diaper. Then during feeding she almost always will poop. I'll do the first breast for about 15 to 20 minutes and she will be so drowsy that she won't latch to the other breast. So then I get up and burp her because lately she has had projectile vomit out of her nose and it really scares me. Then il change her poop diaper, she will wake up again and then want to feed on the other breast for about 15 minutes and the pooping process repeats. Then tonight I went to burp her and she vomited everywhere. I decided not to change her diaper for about 15 minutes and she kept spitting up and vomiting. Any suggestions? Am I feeding her too much? Or is this normal ........ Can you tell I'm a first time mom?
Re: Breast feeding questions - please help
Are you burping her too hard? That could cause vomiting too.
My baby pooped just about every diaper for a while...so I wouldn't be alarmed by that...and she was a very sleepy eater at first, too. Try rubbing the back of her shoulder when she falls asleep, or even gently rubbing the top of her head.
As far as frequency...I still have days where she wants to nurse every hour for long blocks of time. I prefer when they are during the day instead of night
As far as timing the feedings, I stopped doing that. I let her nurse on one side, and then if she fell asleep shortly after starting I would offer that same breast again until it was completely empty. Some times it also seems that she will have a preference...like I offer the right and she fusses for a while, but then will take the left immediately.
Keep at it!
My lo was pooping all day long at first too. That slowed down big time so hang in there.
I used to blow air on my baby to keep him alert and drinking. Also, try burping your lo before feeding as well.
You cannot overfeed a BF baby - so don't worry about that! Their tummys are so small sometimes the milk can seem like it goes straight through them and it kind of does! Just remember that their digestive systems are still developing as well so sometimes it can take a few weeks for everything to fall into place and seem like smooth sailing. :-)
DS was a total guts when he was born and that first few weeks he'd gulp down my milk too fast and need to be burped more frequently otherwise he'd spit up. But he was learning how to do it - now he has figured it out and he takes it slower at first and once my let down has calmed down he feeds very calmly and rhythmically and as soon as he sits up from feeding lets out an almighty burp! And he still poops almost after every feed.
They are learning too - just keep that in mind. You guys are a little team working together to figure it out! You'll get there! Good luck!
