NEED COFFEE!!!!!!!

I really want a (caffinated) coffee right now, Decaf is just not cutting it.  I promised DH that I would stay away, as last prenancy I drank coffee all the way through and DD had extremely bad colic.  (I mean BAD) It lasted an entire year and she had bad gastro and reflux, so she projectile vomited after every meal.

It was a LONG year and it put a real strain on our marriage.

I know that what I eat, has nothing to do with what type of baby comes out, but we really are in need of a zen baby this time that sleeps.  (DD never slept either during the day, as she cried for 12 hours straight, not exagerrating)

So I told DH I would do the exact opposite of everything I did when I was pregnant with DD and that includes giving up caffine completely.

I NEED IT NOW THOUGH!!!!!!!  I am totally craving a coffee, my mouth is watering as I am writing this post lol.

Re: NEED COFFEE!!!!!!!

  • my a.m. coffee (caffeinated) is the one thing i can not and have not given up lol. Its my one caffeine drink a day...gotta have it! lol. props to you for giving it up, but fyi, i never ever touched caffeine w/ my DS and he had awful colic anyway. I have a new respect for any mom who had a child w/ colic, you can explain the frustration/guilt/sadness/madness/fear you go through when you have a child w/ colic. Its deff tough (and it was a rough time for my marriage also, but thank godness we managed to keep our sanity through it all..somehow lol)

  • Is there any connection between caffeine intake during pregnancy and colic, reflux, etc?  I honestly don't know, but I would guess not.

What does your provider say about caffeine intake?

Mine says up to 150mg per day (which seems to be pretty common, I've seen up to 200mg).  While I'm not comfortable drinking caffeine everyday because I don't think it's good for me or baby I do have an occasional caffeinated drink.  If you're wanting some just have a cup of coffee.  With something like this I think it's silly to suffer just to suffer, you know?

Of course you should always do what you're comfortable with.  I think that's the most important thing, always, but I really don't think a cup of coffee is going to negatively impact anything.

Yes.  DH looked at me one day and said. "I now know why people shake their babies".  He NEVER did it.  Let me clear that up.  But it is so hard to have your baby screaming for 12 hours stright and not be able to sooth her at all.  The lack of sleep and silence really puts a toll on you and your relationship for sure.  But like you we got through it and now have the most wonderful little toddler I could ask for.  She listens and helps and is so happy all the time.  She rarely cries now lol, I guess she got it all out of her system early.

No, I don't think there is actually a link between caffine and colic.  It is just something I thought I would do this time around.  I know that little amounts of caffine is ok, I just feel bad going back on my promise to DH if I do it.

  • ME TOO!!! I remember saying that too, the shaking baby thing. Its something that feels terrible to say, and like you said...we never ever woulda did it, but i could see how people have that moment where they just "snap" and cant take it anymore. I used to have to just go put him in the crib and let him cry, while i cried bc he was crying in another room. There should be more classes about this stuff...i wish at the time i woulda known someone who woulda told me "it will get better, it will get easier". Thank goodness for TB, i know where to turn to now!

Just go get it. I drank coffee through my last pregnancy as well and DD did not have colic.

The small amount of caffeine you're drinking when you're pregnant vs not pregnant isn't what will cause colic for a baby. And I don't think colic starts in pregnancy, it starts after birth.

These are just my thoughts though.

  • Did you promise no cups of coffee or no lattes? A latte has a nutritious quantity of milk and is made with espresso not coffee and contains only 75 mg of glorious caffeine. So you can have one right???

     *hands you a latte*

  • Wow, I just cannot imagine colic. I mean, I understood why parents shook their babies (obviously we never did....sad that we have to clear that up) but I understood that even with DD's normal fussiness. Just wanted to give major props to you ladies who endured that. I hope the very best for your next babies!

Also, fwiw, I drank at least a cup a day through my entire pregnancy and a year of breastfeeding, and never saw it affect DD.

  • Then have some. 1 cup of coffee per day is ok.
