Baby Showers

What baby sizes to register for??

Hi Everyone!

My hubby and I just started the registering process for the baby shower and I'm wondering how many varieties of clothing sizes should we put on the list?  For example, onsies...Should we get a few packages of 0-3M and a few 3-6M and even higher?  This is our first baby and I'm feeling a little overwhelmed by the amount of stuff in the baby stores.  Any advice would be much appreciated!  Thank you!!

Re: What baby sizes to register for??

  • I registered for bigger sizes because I figured a large majority of people will buy smaller baby clothes, even if they aren't on the registry, and I already received a lot of hand me downs in the smaller sizes.

  • Bigger sizes, they arent in the little sizes for long, and many babies never fit in newborn.

  • I registered for

NB sized side snap shirts (which he wore around the house a lot, he liked swaddling and this made for easy diaper and skin on skin access.)

    0-3 month side snap shirts

    1 package 0-3 month onesies

    1 pack 3-6 month onesies

2 sleep sacks, both fitting 0-6 months (which DS hated)

1 pack of gender neutral Gerber footed pajamas in NB 1 pack of Carter's sleep gowns in a 0-3 month.

    Hope this helps!

  • Dont register for clothes, you will get them any way, and people like to pick things out. If you see something you like buy it, but dont register for it, its no gurantee you will get it any way.

Started TTC in 2006, LOTS of trying, and trying, and 7 rounds of IVF with 13 embryos, 2 perfect little boys and 5 loses....
All finished with babies, started to make diet changes, Keto, to be MORE for my kids, lost 30 pounds, still going, and 3 months in, I had a natural cycle, and then ovulated... Hubs and I are going to see what happens now... Maybe a natural pregnancy? After everything we have been through? Or just a return to normal hormones? We shall see what the future holds!

  • Stay away from newborn onesies.  Sabrina hated anything being pulled over her head for the first couple of months.  And I hated doing it too...their heads are just too mushy.  I second Punky's call for side snap t-shirts.

However, be careful registering for clothes.  You'll get some anyway.  And I know the little stuff is really cute, but at first they really don't wear anything but diapers and t-shirts.

  • Remember, 80% of what BRU sells you don't need.  15% you need but can find cheaper elsewhere and 5% you need and can only find there.

That being said, don't register for clothes.  lol!  You will likely get whatever people want to buy you anyways, no matter what you "registered" for.  Now, buying your own stuff, I'd get 4 or 5 NB pieces, 10-20 0-3, 3-6, 6-9 and 9-12.  It all depends (really) on what season and what your expectations are.  If you're looking for practicality, on a summer baby that you don't want to dress up every day, a couple onesies go a long way.  A winter baby will obviously require more layers (to an extent) and therefore, more clothes.

  • I would register for a pack of each size onesies/T-shirts in white.  I'm guessing you will get other colored ones with cute sayings/pictures.  I would not register for actual clothes since it is almost impossible to find them at the store and half the time they are either sold out or discontinued (moved on to a new season).  I did register for sleep sacs (they are warm and "safe").  My kids loved them.  Just keep in mind when you will be using them so register for the size that your LO will be during the cold season.

  • Thanks everyone!  This gives me a much better idea of what to register for.  I appreciate it!

  • I didn't bother to register for clothes.  I figured if people bought them, it's because they wanted to pick out cute stuff themselves.

  • I wouldn't register for clothes at all. People love picking out clothes themselves. I would buy things on your own as you see them on clearance, at garage sales, etc. I have been buying like this for a few months and I have about 4 under-the-bed storage totes full of new or like new clothes. I have probably only spent about $75-$100 total.

I'm really hoping I don't get a lot of newborn clothes...DH and his two brothers all weighed over 9 lbs when they were born. Eek!

Agreed... most of the showers I have been to the MTB didn't register for clothes but still got a ton.  As a pp mentioned, if you're going to register at BRU or BBB, the clothes there are probably more expensive.  You can find great deals on baby clothes at places like Kohls - they always have sales and coupons.

The only clothing that I put on my registry was Halo swaddle sleepsacks (a total of 4) because I wanted that specific brand and style.  But, as pp's suggested, if you're going to register for clothing, I'd register for larger sizes.

  • I wouldn't register for clothes-- as PPs said people will buy what they want (aka what they see is cute). However, perhaps you could make a note on your registry saying what sizes of clothes you need, should people want to buy them? Not sure what phrasing you would use for it
  • Not registering for any clothes. And everyone I know and their sisters have already mentioned about how they have gone out to look at clothes. Seems silly since no one wants to buy clothes they didn't get to pick!

I would only register for very basic clothes - onesies, maybe some sleepers - and do a mix of sizes (keep in mind seasons, though, when you decide on sizes).  Don't go overboard with "outfits."  People love to buy baby clothes.  I received a lot of clothes at my shower and most were bigger sizes so I have a closet full of clothes waiting for DS to grown into.

One other note from my experience - we expected DS to be over 8 lbs so I did not buy any newborn clothes.  Turns out he was 7lbs 13 oz and then lost weight so he ended up in newborn clothes for probably a good month.  We had to go out and buy those (which was no big deal), but it would have been nice to at least have been prepared with a few things ahead of time even if we kept the tags on until we knew what would fit him.
