Special Needs

Tomorrow is our last day of EI

I don't even know how I'm going to make it through tomorrow since I'm tearing up typing this right now.

We started EI at 17 months and Chris didn't talk, didn't communicate in any way, didn't eat anything but crackers and cookies.  He was so timid and scared of anything new.

Today, he talks in sentences, is eating new foods every day, excited to do new things, and so confident.

He would not be the kid he is today without their help.  I think this birthday I'm more emotional than his first birthday.  He may eat a cupcake this year for the first time.  At his first birthday, he screamed and cried when we touch his finger to the icing.

We are ready for the next stage of his life in pre-school, but tomorrow will be tough.

  • DS1 last day of EI is soon approaching and I totally understand how you're feeling. It is a mix of emotion and I am so grateful for the amazing therapists that have been a part of our journey. DS1 has come such a long way and made great progress. I wish I could find a way to thank these amazing people that have been by our side every step of the way.

  • Hugs! Happy 3rd Birthday to your little guy too. I know I'm going to blink and we'll be there too...
  • We're a month away too and I know I'm going to get emotional about it. So grateful to his team. I don't know where we'd be without them.

    I know what you mean.

I totally cried our last day of EI.  I remember the first day I met our therapist and we sat down and wrote out our goals and I thought to myself "there is no way he's gonna do that in a year".  And a year later he WAS doing those things.  It was amazing.

  • We made it through!!!  I didn't cry until they left. Good luck to all of you finishing in the next month or two.  It's going to be weird in the next few weeks before I start school with nothing planned 3 days a week. Smile  I'm looking forward to that, though.  My DS and I both can have a break during the school year. Smile

  • Our last day is coming here in just a couple of short months. However, I'm not sure how emotional I will be (probably not much) because our EI is mainly run through a private insurance type thing (so I'll still see those therapists after EI on a private basis), the one EI person that does go to the house actually goes to his daycare so I don't see her often anyway, and because being military and moving around during a deployment I never had a big emotional attachment to his therapists (I've dealt with EI in 3 different states) - although I was quite scared whenever we were starting up someplace new that the new therapists wouldn't be on par with the old therapists.

I am glad you made it through your day! Did you give your therapists anything? I'm not sure what the etiquette is on that.

  • I made these:

However, two of our three therapists have been with us since the beginning of EI.  The third has still been with us for a year.

I also wrote a thank you note, had DS color for them in the card, and included some pictures of them with DS during therapy.

They all seemed to appreciate the gifts.

  • Awww... I TOTALLY get it.  Tomorrow is my son's last day too and his changes are much like your son's.  He also screamed and cried at his 1st birthday when he touched his smash cake. Freaked out!  Now he is an amazing almost 3 year old.

    I get it.

EI is an amazing thing. And for kids who just need a developmental push, it is a life changer.

I totally cried at his last DI session today and will probably do it again tomorrow during his last speech session.

Congrats to you and your DS for all his progress and best of luck in preschool and for good things ahead.
