Rec your backpack carriers

I'm looking to get a backpack carrier that distributes the weight properly and I was hoping you ladies might be able to help. We just borrowed a friend's Kelty (an older one) and we thought it was rather high up on the back and uncomfortable. I got used to it after a while, but DH didn't like it. DD is 20lbs and we're looking to go on hikes. TIA

Re: Rec your backpack carriers

  • I recently borrowed an angelpack and really liked it.  We just got a boba because I hear they are great for older babies but we havent tried it out yet, it's been too hot and it seems like it would get really sweaty.

  • My DH loves the kelty so that might not help, but what about an ergo? You can do a back carry easily on that and they're lower on your back.

  • Honestly, I hate framed backpack carriers.  Yeah, they fit on your body properly, but LO is too far back for proper weight balancing and they are dangling by their crotch (DD would never use the foot stirrups even once she was big enough for them) which isn't a good thing for their body, even at this older age, for long stretches of time).  I did use a Sherpani framed baby backpack when she was little (before six months) and didn't like how her weight couldn't be secured tight in (they leave space between the adult's back and the baby's tummy) and hence would wobble.  The frame itself could fit me well, just as well as my backpacking backpacks, but the weight distribution bothered me.

When I go hiking with DD, and she doesn't want to walk (since she's 2), I have two options I go to:

    - a woven wrap: I don't use this much any more since she's not terribly happy with it any more, though she loved it from 14mo-22mo or so.  I love wovens and would use them all the time if bringing them out didn't make my toddler protest so strongly.  It's not super duper convenient for up and down on a trail, where the ends of the wrap can get dirty, nor is it super convenient if the trail is muddy at all, but I've done it a number of times and it worked out fine.  What I love is that it is so customizable, and - for me - a reinforced rucksack carry (especially with tibetan tie) is comfortable for long stretches, even on her 30lbs).

    - SSC (soft structured carrier): I have a Pikkolo, which I've used for back carries since she was 6mo old and use for front carries when she won't go on my back and asks for front instead.  I'm about to receive a toddler size Bamberoo in the mail, and look forward to using that as she's outgrown the Pikkolo.  (The fabric on the bottom is supposed to go from knee to knee to support their legs properly, and it hasn't done that for a while.  The Boba (another SSC) uses foot stirrups to help accomplish some of the better carrying of baby's legs, but since my daughter wouldn't use them before, I opted for something different.  If I weren't willing to pay the price for a wrap conversion which is likely to be my last wrap, and wanted only a half buckle that had woven wrap like straps, I would have gone with the Boba and figured out a way to make it work.

  • Almost all of the framed carriers are crotch danglers, they are even banned from being sold on the swap for that reason!  I'd go with a ssc that you can wear on your back...Tula, Kinderpack, Bamberoo...among many others are great for this!
  • I really like my Ergo Sport for back carries. Very comfy for both of us.

  • We love our Boba :)

  • I just tried an Ergo today and I'm sold. It was lower on the back, and DD fussed a bit until we started to move, but then she was fine. It felt a lot more comfortable.

  • If you have another baby, you'll use it a ton in the front carry and it's pretty easy to nurse in once they're a few months old. I think you'll like it. Most have enough strap range to be worn by either parent.
  • I use an Osprey... they just came out this year. Easy adjustability and a lot better for the crotch issue brought up earlier. My son loves it, and wants to sit in it whenever he sees it. Had a day out with three kids and a Kelty, Deuter, and an Osprey... our kid seemed to have the most comfy ride (altho the Deuters are nice, too).

Ergo users like them for hiking short distances. You can't carry anything and your kiddo can't see around the same, but it would probably be easier on the hiker if weight is an issue.
