What sizes are you buying?

I know this is a silly question for a STM, but I'm just trying to figure out what sizes I should be buying for LO. I don't really remember with DS#1 and I don't know if I should just stick to 0-3 months or if I should buy some Newborn, how many exactly? I only have 2 one-piece pj's that are Newborn size because I don't want too many and then DS#2 be too big for them or have too many and he grows too fast to even wear them. Does anyone know about how many of each size I should have on hand?

Re: What sizes are you buying?

  • I don't think there's one set answer.  Some babies outgrow newborn stuff quick.  Others like my DD stay in newborn stuff for 2mos.  DD was a long and lean baby.  We've never moved up a size because of weight, always for length.

  • I'm probably going to get a couple in newborn and a bunch in 0-3 and just not wash anything till the baby is born.  Then we'll know for sure what else needs to be bought and washed.

Same here. I will have a couple of each ready to go (washed), but I am not going to take the tags off most of them so that I can return anything that I need to and get the right size.

  • DD wore Carter's NB basics (jammies, onesies etc.) for MONTHS so I have a ton in that size. I think most babies can wear it just fine!

I have maybe 5 things in newborn sizes.  I've been buying tons 0-3, 3-6, 9mo/6-12m for winter. I've been buying ahead on end of summer sales in size 12-18 and 18-24m for next summer.  I'm basing this off of what sizes my girls were wearing at certain ages, they were 7lbs and born at 37 weeks and wore newborn for maybe 2 weeks and only larger fitting nb items, so assuming he is born at 37 weeks or later, I'm guessing that we'll probably avoid nb sizing all together. DH and I are 5'10'' and 6'6'', so he's bound to be a long baby. Hopefully it will work out for me! ;)

  • DD was 6lbs 10oz when she was born, and she stayed in NB sizes for a long time. Like PP, she outgrew the length long before she would outgrow the weight (same issues now).

When they are that young, I generally keep them in sleepers rather than "outfits" because they are easier to change and just look more comfy. We will start with mostly NB sized stuff and then work into the 0-3 as he grows into that size (although we do have about 10 sleepers/onsies in this size already.)

  • I didn't have anything newborn with DS and I remember hating not having things that even kinda fitted for a couple of weeks (esp with all the pics) so I have picked up about five or six little onesie or comfy pj like outfits just to have something.  I've also been getting them at consignment stores so I think I have $20 invested

  • DS1 skipped newborn size entirely. DD wore it for about 2 months, and like others have said, she outgrew the length first. Right now I have 9 NB outfits for DS2 and I think I'll stick with that until he gets here. If I need more then, they're easy enough to come by.

It is different per baby. My DD was almost 10lbs and really didn't fit in her NB size coming home outfit. She has always been larger than the size she should technically be in. I bought all 6-9 month clothing for her for her first summer and she was in 9-12 by the time she was 6is months old. So really never wore any of her summer clothes I pre-bought.

This one is already measuring ahead which I know can be off and will arrive 1 week early which could also effect her size. I have quite a bit NB size stuff from DD that was never worn so I have that out and then I am buying 0-3 and 3-6 in winter and not buying beyond that.

My BFF had a 6lb baby but she was really long making her super skinny and she actually had to wear preemie size clothes for her first two weeks.

  • What good brands do you guys buy for newborn sizes?  I find that except for Carter's it is difficult for me to find anything besides 0-3 at the smallest and that doesn't seem to be the same thing.  Yes, this is a silly FTM question. :)

  • I think I have two newborn sleepers and everything else is 0-3. I have large babies (9-14 and 9-4) so I'm lucky if they can ever fit into a newborn size.

This can differ too.  I noticed that some brands fit differently.  I love Carter's but like I said, DD is long and lean and that brand seemed to fit her build best.

Exactly this except my son was 6 pounds, 9 ounces. He is still very small so he stays in sizes for a loooong time. We also did mostly feetie sleepers in the beginning because you know, where are they going? We ended up having to get like 10 NB sleepers because he peed through 2 or 3 every night.  Then we got a bunch of 0-3 for the next months, and this time a couple little outfits too.

ETA: There are NB sized things at Target as well as Buy Buy Baby (first impressions is their brand I think)

  • With DD we had only bought 2 onesies & pant combos and 3 nb sleepers.  She was 7lbs 7oz when she was born but fit in nb for 6 weeks.  My mom and sister went shopping for her and got her several more sleepers and outfits to wear.  This time I have picked up a couple of long sleeve onesies since the weather will be a little cooler and if it is warmer I have all of DD nb short sleeve things.  If we need more I'll have plenty of people who love to shop and would be more than willing to go pick us up some things.
