Low amniotic fluid/small baby

Hi all! Post time poster but full-time reader.

I wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem. I went for my 20wk US and the tech told me that my amniotic fluid "looked low" so she took a few measurements then went to get the doctor. They told me that my amniotic fluid is measuring at 7 and the baby is the size of a 17.5wk baby. Everything else looked good. We found the kidneys, all four chambers of the heart, the stomach, the brain, but did not get to see the sex! They explained to me that the low fluid makes it hard to see and move around. So no movement, no sex. It sunk in later but I really started worry. DH has me on "Operation Hydrate". I realize that the fluid is somewhat "fixable" but should I be worried about the size? I made the mistake of googling this and am pretty freaked out right now. Help!

Never trust Dr. Google... matter of fact avoid Dr. Google at all costs!

Go by the advice of your real M.D. Doctor. if he didn't give much advice go back and talk to him again.

  • Our baby was measuring a week behind where it should. Our thoughts were as long as everything is developing correctly, we're not 'too' concerned about size. As long as he/she is healthy and happy we don't care if he/she is small, big, skinny, or fat! Big Smile

I would be a-ok if baby is a little small around its due date  Wink

We had a concern a week or too ago about spina bifida and made the mistake of googling. Never ever google! My BFF (who has a 5 year old) gave me a lecture on how to never google things about your kid.

  • I had low AFI with DD.  5 is lowest they will let it go before they start talking about hospitalization.  7 is still decent.  Mine was at 3 at 35 weeks.  At 37 weeks it was 1.5.  A decision was made to deliver then.  I had a happy helathy 6 lb 1 oz baby girl.

Did they talk about reasons for it?  I do hydrate and this time I am on a baby aspirin supplement- it's supposed to stop that.  You may ask your doc about that.  And continue to pump the water.  As long as the doctors are monitoring it, you should be fine.

  • I didn't get any reason for it. The doctor wants to see me back in 4 weeks to do another scan. I think as long as we show growth, we're fine. The baby asprin was mentioned to me but never really discussed. I may call and ask about it since you mention it. He did find a "kinked" artery (mine). That raised a little concern but there really isn't anything we can do about it right now.

     Thanks for the info!

Sure.  I know it's scary!  But if your doctor isn't all that concerned, you should be okay.  But I would call about the baby aspirin.

  • I don't know how much detail you desire but from memories of my friend's similar experience last summer for her 20 wk ultrasound, they had her come back at 24 weeks to be measured again. Assuming it's the same process, they'll look at fluid level, size of each of the major organs & body, as well as checking to see that growth is proportional (i.e. they're all growing at the same rate).  If fluid levels decrease, like some one else said, they'll talk possible hospital stay /visit where they can keep a closer eye on things.  Or could do more frequent ultrasounds.

If all looks good though, they'll keep an eye on things.

Meanwhile, do what you can with hydration & rest.  My friend's doctor would remind her that every day inside, the baby grows and develops - each day adds up to a stronger and more developed baby.

Let us know how things go!
