Cribs

Hi,

I was hoping from some guidance. I am pregnant with our first. My uncle has offered us the crib from his children. I know they spent a bit of money on the crib and the crib is very nice and was kept in great condition. This being said I also know that it is a drop side crib. Does anyone have any advice on this? Can I call the manufacture and ask for a kit to fix it from being a drop side crib or is it completely un useable?

 Thanks in advance

Re: Cribs

  • I would not use it.  I would just spend the $100 or whatever and get a new crib that has fixed sides.  How old are his kids?  More recalls besides the drop sides may have been issued for it if it is very old also.

  • I think that it is safe if you know the manufacturer, model number, and that you have all of the hardware for proper assembly.  Check for all of the recalls and get a kit to immobilize the drop side.

I would only be worried if I didn't have information to contact the company.

  • I would ask for the make and model and if you can get a stabilization kit I would accept. I have a Pottery Barn crib I bought with my first. It's a dropside, but the pieces that were breaking and hurting kids were plastic and those pieces on my crib are thick metal. I'm using the kit to make sure it no longer lowers (which totally stinks because I'm short and need a step stool to reach in now, which also seems less than ideal) but I'm not concerned. It was "recalled" to get the repair kit sent but there have been 0 incidents of children being hurt with a Pottery Barn crib so I'm not terribly concerned.

Thanks for the replies. I will call the company and I am ure they will send the repair kit. The crib is not old and is a well made crib. I will feel safe using it if we are able to get the repair kit.

  • No to a drop side crib.

Get an inexpensive new crib that fits current safety standards (which get updated all the time!).  Our Ikea Gulliver in white was $99 and much safer than an older drop side crib.

  • I'd get a new one, it's much safer.
