Q about pacifier sizes

Today I went and bought a few new pacifiers for my son (almost 3 months) I got some Nuk, and some Avent brand so they are two different shapes. I know he'll take either shape but I noticed the size of the Avent was a lot larger than the Nuks, so I got a 6 month size Nuk instead of the 0-3 month size, so both pacifiers are about the same size. What I'm wondering is if it's ok to give him the Nuk in a size up because of the way the nipple is shaped to press against the palate...does this make sense? I don't wanna screw with his orthodontics KWIM? Maybe i'm just being a weirdo and worrying about nothing, he already used it and likes it, so I guess I have nothing to be worried about. Just looking for opinions.

Re: Q about pacifier sizes

  • You did the right thing by buying different ones and let your baby make his choice.

They are bad so take it off his schedule of sucking before his 4th month if you can. You should start cleaning his gums. Teeth should come out fine just keep up and check his mouth by inserting your pinky around his mouth close to his outside side of his gum when you clean is a great time to check.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for the input, while I don't totally agree that they are "bad" I do plan on weaning him off probably when we start solids at 6 months or so. My son has a strong urge to suck, and we only use them when he's fussy and needs soothing. Now that he's babbling and trying to talk he prefers to not even have one most of the time. But my real question was about the size, not the use of one in general. Do you think that buying a size larger than his age is not a good thing, maybe the nipple is too big? Although again, I doubt it makes too much of a difference. Thanks for the tip about gum cleaning tho! I know I have one of those finger-tip cleaners somewhere...

  • If he seems comfortable and it doesn't look like his mouth is really too full, then you're probably all right. If all else fails, give a shout to the dentist or your pedi and see what their thoughts on it are.
