Trisomy 18 and 13?

My doctor called me this afternoon with my NT scan and blood test results. The baby doesn't show any sign of Down Syndrome but she said the tests for the Trisomy 18 and 13 weren't exactly on point. She said that the risk of LO having these issues is 1 in 700 down from 1 in 1700. She also said that my papp-a and HCG levels were low? This is my first pregnancy and I'm new to all of this. Has anyone else had anything similar told to them? I keep reading all over thebump.com that these test aren't very reliable. Advice anyone?

  • 1 in 700 is still a very low risk. Chances are still 699 out of 700 that your baby will be just fine.  I personally wouldn't worry about those results at all.

    This.  I know it's scary - but I always play it in my mind like this:  If someone told me I had a 699 in 700 chance of having issues, I'd be pretty firmly convinced that I was out of luck.  Then flip it around - that's actually your odds of having a perfectly healthy baby.

    Definitely talk to your doctor to better understand things - but try to keep in mind that 699 in 700 is pretty good odds.  ::hugs::

  • Thank you ladies. I had a bit of an emotional meltdown over this yesterday while posting this. After sleeping on it and hearing form some of you I'm feeling a little more confident today. My doctor said they offer a new non-invasive test called MaterniT21 that is an alternative to the amnio. The MaterniT21 is just another blood draw vs. the risks of the amnio so I think we're going to have it done just for peace of mind. Unfortunately, the insurance won't cover it because its a fairly new test but I think paying the $235 out of pocket it well worth it to ease my mind a bit more.

  • i would definitely recommend the T21 before any other invasive tests.  Good luck & keep up updated!!! and {{hugs}}
