Migraines :-( Maybe not eating enough?

At  15 weeks 3 days I'd only gained 3 pounds because the doctor told me to 'eat normally' since I had a few extra pounds (15 - 20). Now in my second trimester I am supposed to go up to 2,200 - 2,400 and I can't seem to do it. I eat healthy meals and I'm full around 400 - 500 calories, there doesn't seem to be room for more unless I add junk food or eat fast food. I'm getting about 1,800 calories a day.

I am 16 weeks 1 day today, and I've had 2 migraines in the last two weeks. I'm concerned maybe my body isn't getting enough because it's all going to baby--it's definitely worse if I eat less.

Any ideas on how to up my calories, and/or treat migraines?

How about a yogurt smoothie? I make one in the morning with frozen berries, orange juice, spinach (can't taste it!), and vanilla yogurt. There's a lot of good stuff in there, you can change up the combos, and it goes down really easily. It might be a good way to add a few more calories at night or in the morning, in addition to meals.

Also, nuts, peanut butter, and avocado are all high in calories, but pretty good for you. A handful of trail mix is great to snack on, not hugely filling, in terms of room in your stomach, but will get you protein, carbs, and calories!

I don't get migraines... but definitely more headachey when I haven't eaten.

Hope you figure out something that works!

  • Not eating enough can cause blood pressure changes which can lead to a migraine. Nuts & natural peanut butter are great caloric options.
  • Not eating enough is possible however I have noticed many of us Jan mamas getting headaches right now, myself included. Someone said its the surge of hormones during this stage in pregnancy. Might not be the case for you but just throwing it out there.

  • Are you drinking enough? Dehydration causes headaches. I have been getting headaches too, but I think I am not drinking enough.  I think during pregnancy women should be drinking 10 cups of water a day. Try drinking more, that is what I am doing.
  • Great ideas, thanks!

I like the dark chocolate flavor

when I get migraines,  I get very depleted and ensure + pedialyte pops work wonders to keep me out of the ER

  • I really like Carnation Breakfast Essentials in the morning. Love the chocolate and the french vanilla flavors. It's a great way to get healthy calories and I also find it helps keep me full.

I've continued to eat normally and I don't feel like I've really increased by calorie intake at all.  If anything I'm probably eating fewer calories because I'm eating better. I'm interested to see my weight when I go to the doctor next week. My doctor hasn't really mentioned how much I should or shouldn't gain. My goal would be 20 or less since I think my BMI makes me overweight even though I don't feel like I am. I'm just short and thick and have been all my life.

Same for me as well. I think headaches might just be normal at this stage. I did read that during the 2nd tri there is a decrease in a certain hormone and that sudden loss can cause headaches.
