LO sounds like they have an accent

Someone mentioned in TTT that when LO speaks, it sounds like a french accent.  Does anyone else notice this too?  When Whitney says "Papa", I feel like we are not in the US.  Lots of things that come out of her mouth sound french, and it is so dang adorable.

Yeah, it was me that said DD sounds like she has a French accent when she says No no no. It is totally cute. I'm curious if anyone else notices this too. I love all the funny way she pronounces things. But then again, my DD kind of sounds like a Furby in general.

  • Still no talking over here. I wish I could hear some French!
  • The accent melts my heart. Love his little baby voice!

Don't worry MLD, he will be talking your ear off in no time. Big Smile

Our little guys just don't want to talk I guess!

MLD and Rosie - when you say they aren't talking, what does that mean? Are they making sounds to indicate things at all (even if they aren't actual words)? Do they have any words? How is their understanding? [Feel free to ignore, and not trying to stress you out.]

I won't ignore - I'd love your take on things.

He will say "Up" and "Down" as he moves up and down. When I read him a specific book it says "Elmo says Ma-ma-ma, Elmo says Da-da-da" and before I even turn to that page he's saying "Ma-ma-ma" and "Da-da-da". Also in that book it says "Elmo does Peek-a-boo" and he'll do peek-a-boo as soon as we turn to that page.  I think he might have said No once this weekend in context but hasn't said it again. He does a ton of baby babble but doesn't use real words with meaning except for the up/down thing.

He will follow commands. Like if he's standing on the couch and I tell him to sit, he will. If he has something I want I'll say "Give that to mommy" and he does. I could also tell him to get a book and he'll go get it. Things like that.

He says no actual words except for "Mama" and sometimes "kitty" or "Hi".  We do have conversations in baby talk and he does communicate with me by doing things to get his point across.  Like MLD he'll sit when I tell him, bring me things and when I say let's go buh bye he'll run to the door..etc.  He does "talk" all day long.

If they're articulating (making sounds) and communicating what they want/need in certain ways and understanding I might hold off a bit before getting an evaluation. And it sounds like both boys have at least 2 or 3 words, which is great. Do they do animal sounds? Point to body parts?

Does your insurance cover early intervention for Speech Pathology? ('Cause if it does, it doesn't hurt to get an evaluation - it's just someone hanging out with a kid and playing it's not like it's some scary invasive testing.)

No animal sounds and he points to body parts but doesn't always get them right.

Went to the pedi yesterday and he didn't ask 1 question about talking - when I initiated that conversation he told me there's a reason he didn't ask...because boys tend to be slower at speaking than girls.

    True or BS?

I have no ide about insurance - I would venture to say mine does not but  I will definitely look into it.

More boys have language delays than do girls and some researchers believe that boys tend to be slower than girls. That said, around 18 months is when I personally (remember I'm not a clinician) would start to get antsy. Check your insurance. If it's covered, it can't hurt to see what's up. I'll try to ask some Speech Pathologists too.

  • It sounds like they are both talking just fine. I wouldn't sweat it. Especially if your pedi isn't concerned. Smile
