Introducing Callen Knight! (Birth story and PIP) long

Hello All!

First, I want to say congratulations to all the July mommies who have welcomed their precious babies into the world while I've been absent for a week! I still have yet to go back through all the archives and look at them all.

So, last monday at 7:30 pm, we were at the hospital for our scheduled induction (due to IUGR) and I had the Cervidil inserted at 9 pm (just for the record, that hurt like HELL!!!!! - I was crawling up the bed as the midwife inserted that mess!) Unfortunately, I did have to have an IV and have continuous monitoring (the IV would have happened anyway because of GBS+). Anyway, by 11 pm my contractions had already ramped up, and around 12 am, I started that uncontrollable shaking (that lasted on and off the rest of my labor).

The cervidil was supposed to be in for 12 hours, but I ended up only having it in for 6 because of how quickly I was progressing. But man, I had some pretty intense back labor that really made it difficult to stay focused on my breathing and relaxing. At some point the nurse suggested getting in the jacuzzi tub, and oh, sweet relief! I wondered why I hadn't gotten in a long time ago. By the time I reached 5-6 centimeters, I got nauseous and threw up - but felt much better afterwards. I kept apologizing for different things, and the nurse finally told me that if I apologized one more time, she'd strap me down in the bed for good (jokingly of course).

I eventually went back to laboring in the bed, and by morning I was looking for them to break my water. The midwife came it to do it and again, relief! DH said it looked like she did it with a giant chopstick, lol. And not too long after that, I was feeling "pushy" (I had lost track of time by this point) I was checked one more time, told I was just shy of 10 centimeters, just had a little bit of a lip left, and the activity started - nurses everywhere getting things set up, and trying to get a hold of the dr, but she was apparently busy with another lady (it was a busy morning) so I was stuck with the midwife - let me just say, I was already not to impressed with her, and this last part settled my unhappiness with her. She just stood there, with her hands clasped together, saying things like "You're doing great, keep pushing, don't let him go back in, don't let him go backwards" UH, how about you get your butt over here and not let him go backwards, there's only so much pushing I can do lady! Finally, she came over and got involved, and helped get the last part of his head out, and then had me stop pushing for a minute because they had to cut the cord as it was wrapped around his neck, but then one more push and he was here!!

During the pushing part, I kept hearing the nurses say how it was obvious I had practiced for this, and were amazed that this was my first baby because of how calmly I was managing everything (maybe that's why at one point I looked up and noticed I had a very large nurse audience?) I personally felt like I yelled a lot while pushing (couldn't help it though) but the nurses kept saying no, I did awesome and it was one of the best med free births they had seen. I have to say, it hurt a lot, and definitely wasn't what I expected, but at no point did I ever feel like I couldn't do it or want to cave to drugs (but with my bad history with drugs, I think the fear of crazy side effects out-weighed my pain). I did tear, and had a laceration up top - as the midwife stitched me up, I felt it all and again was clawing up the bed to which she said "I don't know why you are feeling this, I numbed you up" Well obviously not good enough darlin'! geez....she is not gentle at all, just roots around down there like a pig hunting truffles.

But overall, it went really well, DH was super awesome throughout the whole thing, and we couldn't be happier with our lil' peanut! So, here he is, Callen Knight - 5lbs 13oz, 18" long, 9.9 APGAR. 7-17 @ 10:23 am.
