3D Ultrasounds

Someone told me yesterday that 3D Ultrasounds are really loud to the baby. Something akin to a train underwater and that's why in many of the pics you see they have their arms by their head. Anyone know if this is true? I just found it interesting. My husband wants to get them done but I really have no interest.

  • Huh.  No idea.  I'm not a fan of them to begin with.  I don't know that you can attribute the hands by the head thing to that specifically though as I think it's pretty common for babies to be that way.  I say this thinking about how newborns still keep their arms and legs all tucked up near their bodies for a while like when they're in the womb.

  • Just found this- https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn1639-fetuses-can-hear-ultrasound-examinations.html

3d ultrasounds give me the heebs. Especially this early. With my son we went for a growth ultrasound at 37 weeks, and she flipped on the 3d without asking. Thank goodness we were not team green. There was no mistaking the little boy in there.

Yeah - a quick google search confirms that apparently this is true.  Apparently at some point someone put a hydrophone in a woman's uterus and recorded the 3D ultrasound at over 100 decibels (or approximately the sound of a subway train).

I'm not sure why these things are so popular when both the American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine and the FDA have outright said that elective 3D ultrasounds should clearly not be used.

    Whatever.  I certainly won't be having one . . .

  • Yeah the girl I talked to said the technician told her after doing the u/s. Then of course she felt horrible for doing that to her child. I'm not Team Green but I'm not dying to know what the baby looks like in the womb, I think seeing his or her features at birth will be a wonderful and surprising experience.

Don't know. But I didn't do it with my first & won't with this one. I'm going to be honest - I have seen them (my cousin did one with her first & had a video to boot) and it just looks creepy to me.

    Wow, that's crazy!

And also: Yes to your second statement.

  • My u/s wasn't elective, they were checking on the subchoronic hemmorage that I have (it's almost gone now btw) but while we were there she went ahead and flipped to 3d.  I did not ask for it but I also enjoyed getting to see a little more depth to the picture than the 2d ones gave.  I'm sorry if I creeped anybody out by posting that but I thought it kinda showed the personality that my baby has already.

Thanks for sharing this info... There is no way I will be having one now. The day before I gave birth to DS they did a 3D ultrasound because they thought he was going to be a big baby and want to double check size and weight.  I remember his hand being close to his face too.  Poor thing :(

  • All ultrasounds are loud, they use sound waves to create the images.

I don't think it damages a child. I did it with my first, it was fun and he is fine.  I might not do it with this one because of the cost but I'm not sure yet.

The baby didn't have it's hands by it's head the whole time and if you read the study they posted it said that it doesn't do any harm to the baby and the baby can't really hear it.  The noise wasn't specific to the 3d u/s either, both are loud but at a level that humans can't hear.

I wasn't posting this about you! Your post just reminded me of what the girl had said and I was wondering if anyone else had heard the same thing.

  • I never heard this before. At my n/t scan, the tech just flipped a switch and showed us without asking and I didnt think anything of it but this is very interesting to know. Thanks for the info.

  • I have no idea but I'm not interested in a 3D unless the doctor sees something she wants to further investigate.
