C-sections

running/exercise affter c-section

I'm pregnant with baby girl #2 and will be having another RCS. I didnt work out or run throughout my 1st pregnancy, however, this time I kept up with running throughout. My c-section is going to be in Dec (I'm only 18 weeks), but was wondering - have you been told to wait a full 6 weeks before working out again? I will ask my dr at the next appt in Aug, but was just wondering what your doctors have said.

Re: running/exercise affter c-section

  • At two weeks my doctor said I could start walking and doing light exercise. I probably started doing too much, too soon and even by 8 weeks I was still very sore. I'm planning to take the full 8 weeks or more this time. A c/s is a major surgery and it's understandable to need a full 2 months or more to recover.

I was walking by a week post-op, but did not feel up to running until 6 months pp. I had a difficult recovery and was quite sore for a long time.

Wait the 6 weeks. You'll only set yourself back by doing too much too soon.

  • I didn't do much other than walk the first 8 weeks. Then I added some light exercise and I'm just now, at 12 weeks, jumping rope and a little running.

  • I've been told to wait 8 weeks before REAL exercise ALL 3 times so far. Will be the same this time. I exercised until the week before I gave birth with #3, and I'm still going strong now at practically 30 weeks.

I am allowed to walk beforehand. No running, jogging, weight lifting, etc. I have to wait 8 weeks.

To be honest, I really need to give my body time to heal, especially since this will be my 4th c-section.......

  • I am not super athletic and I dont run but have been ablento resume workouts of good intensity such as elliptical/zumba/weights at 5 weeks post c section.  It was tough at first and still is but more so because I did nothing my entire pregnancy than anything else.  My advice would be to talk to your doctor - mine was comfortable with me resuming normal activities when I did and to listen to your body.

  • I was able to start running again less than 6 weeks pp.  My c-section was 5/29 and I was running this month starting 7/1 (3 miles).  I waited about 4.5 weeks.  I also went for a 3 mile jog the night before my c-section so I was running throughout my pregnancy.  I did a 5K last Thursday and felt pretty good. The farthest I've run is 4 miles so I'm not going on long runs yet but that's also because it's been so hot and I have 2 kids.

  • My OB said since my vaginal wall was not affected (because I had a c/s) I could start light to moderate exercise around 2 weeks PP.  I was able to walk but I really wasn't able to run until 8 weeks PP because I was still so sore.  Listen to your body and take it easy the first few weeks.

  • I started using the eliptical machine at 3 weeks PP.  I am 4 days in and haven't had any issues.  I can't wait until my doctor will let go back to bootcamp!
  • My c-section wasn't planned and due to the reasons behind it I was encouraged to walk as soon as possible PP I'm just over 5 weeks out and I've been walking daily since about 3 weeks PP. A friend of mine told me that while she was working out like normal again at 4 months PP from her c-section she still got sore from a serious ab workout she did. As others pointed out it is major surgery so checking with the doc is probably the best bet. I'm going to ask mine when I go in for my next PP visit when she thinks I can start my Zumba again.
