I was talking to a co-worker yesterday who recently returned from maternity leave and she asked me if I had the Baby Bargains book. I had not heard of it. She basically said it was similar to the Consumer Reports book on all things baby. She suggested I purchase that and then use it to make an online registry since I could do both from home at my own pace.
Did anyone else use this book? Also, did anyone else solely register online (as in, did not go into a store to register, even if you used BRU, BBB or Target)?

Re: baby bargains book?
I registered online at BRU because that is the only baby place in my hometown and I don't want to go back just to register there.
I tried to make sure everything I registered for was sold in stores, because I know that most people don't actually buy things online for babies
I bought this book from Amazon a couple of weeks ago and am almost done. It's a great buy! It helps figure out what you need and what you don't and rates the products. It's very helpful while registering!
Wedding Album/Knot Bio/My Pregnancy Chart
As first-time parents, it's really helped us understand what's truly needed vs not and where we can save a bit of $$ instead of splurging. Plus, the writers include rankings/reviews of products, so you can see if something you were leaning towards is a C- instead of a B+, for example. Some of the best $14 I've ever spent. :-)
Re: registering. We'll probably end up doing a combination of online and in-store. We started ours online, but as I've been researching items, I'm finding myself saying, "but if I could just touch it!" a lot.
I didn't realize this. I wanted to register for more crib bedding from The Land of Nod, but I don't want to register at Crate and Barrel just for that. I'll have to figure that out and make an amazon registry then!!

I haven't registered yet, but I did get the book. I found it to be very helpful in most cases.
For example, it talks about the various cribs available (from inexpensive IKEA through crazy expensive) and gives pretty detailed reviews of each brand. It also talks about which brands are made by the same companies (for example, their favorite crib brand is also sold by JCPenney under a different, less expensive, name). Then, at the end of each section, it matches price and quality to come up with the best buys. Like, their "Good" buys were the IKEA ones and the Graco Lauren and Sarah cribs (since they're inexpensive at $150ish, but still good quality); their "Better" buys were the Bedford Baby cribs from Penneys since they like the Westwood Design brand and the Penney's price (around $400ish); their "Best" buys were the Westwood Design cribs at around $600 (www.westwoodbaby.com). Ironically, the $800 crib that we had seen at the baby boutique in town didn't make the list.
I bought the book a few months ago and have been reading a chapter every week or so. It's ALOT of information and most of it goes right out my head after I read it. I actually keep it with me at work now so that I can reference stuff when I'm baby shopping online during the day
We haven't actually registered yet - but I've made one online at Amazon just so I can add stuff when I think of it and then have time to go back and look more into it! (aka check out my Baby Bargains book
)
Good luck putting together your registry!
I love that book! We got it when we found out we were pregnant, and it's been great to read through. It also was great for DH to read because he was able to weigh what he thought and find out what brands he was comfortable with due to their ratings list.
We registered at BuyBuyBaby and Amazon.com. We have friends who are online a lot, and prefer to make orders online (plus, some things have proven to be cheaper!) So, we did both.
Awesome book, really helped me narrow it down, and I recommend it to everyone I meet who is pregnant with their first.
I also did my registry online at BRU for the same reason your friend recommended. I signed up for my registry at the store just because we went there after my A/S, but would have been fine with it either way.

This book has been sooooo helpful to me. It is hard for me to know which companies to trust for quality and safety since a lot of what I've seen looks like junk. This book has helped me weed out the trash from the quality products.
I thought I had decided which crib I was going to get until I read the review. I thought I had to spend an arm and a leg to get a quality crib that would last, but after reading BB I decided on a crib that was $300 less and of much better quality!
There is so much information, it made my head spin at first, but I love that they break it down to simple recommendations at the end of the chapter.
Highly recommend!!
Oh and I started my registry at BRU online but update as needed both in store and online.
That was like my BIBLE the first time around. A good friend gave it to me when I hit the 2nd trimester and that coupled with a bit of online research, was how we did our registry.
We did it completely online (times three). I never took that little gun in my hand or anything. I looked at a few other people's registries I'm friends with for inspiration and that was that.
I did test drive some strollers to ensure I liked the feel and also to have DH try it out (since he's a taller guy).
