Hypoglycemia & Lack of Appetite

I have been struggling a lot with weight & blood sugar during pregnancy. I haven't had any "true" m/s but have had a greatly decreased appetite since day 1, despite which I have still gained quite a bit of weight (10lbs by 6wks - but none since & I'm nearly 11wks). The problem is, I was hypoglycemic before pregnancy & have been having way more trouble controlling it lately. I work at a job where snacking is not allowed so from 2p-10p I only have a 30min break to eat. Between the weight gain & lack of appetite making me not want to eat & the dizziness/hypoglycemia making me NEED to eat I'm getting really frustrated. I don't eat crappy food & normally control my sugar no problem. Any advice??

Re: Hypoglycemia & Lack of Appetite

  • Snacking not allowed?! I would be searching for a new job (j/k). I am not sure what your job is, but is there any way to get approved to snack? Seems like since it is a health-related issue, they really can't say no. I know that I don't feel good (dizzy and queasy) if I don't eat when I feel hungry. I always keep a small snack in my purse now...just in case.

  • WHERE do you work? 2P-10P is an 8hr shift. Most state labor laws require employers to give you one 30min unpaid break per 4hrs of work, as well as one paid 10min break per 4hrs of work. That said, I am going to assume that they are at least humane and allow workers to keep closed drink containers at their stations... You could try bringing meal replacement shakes to work in a closed sports bottle to help keep your calorie/glucose intake regulated. Maybe talk to your doc about which ones are best and which ones could just cause problems (could be a huge range depending on how severe your hypoglycemia is, whether it's reactive, prediabetic, etc).

  • I work for an MHMR facility doing direct care & we are not allowed to eat in front of our clients. Since direct care is ALWAYS with the clients, we are not allowed to snack. The only way I can think of that would not risk my job would be to hide in the bathroom & scarf something down. It's a really screwy situation & I am very happily leaving at the end of next month (we're moving) but until then it's going to be difficult.

  • I'd be getting a drs note saying you need to snack breaks. I'm hypoglycemic too and if I don't eat every 2-3 hrs I feel like hell. You need to be eating more or you aren't going to control it. Period.

  • I agree, you should have a doctor's note for snacking due to hypoglycemia. You don't have to say it has anything to do with pregnancy. I'm hypoglycemic, too. My doctor told me to eat more protein- meat, peanut butter etc.

Labor laws should entitle you to breaks, you should look into your state law. All the states I worked in had a law of an unpaid 30 minute lunch for an 8 hour shift and reasonable access for restroom breaks.
