I was telling someone we're having 40 or 50 people at E's 1st birthday and she made some comment about how ridiculous it is to invite that many people. I tried to explain it's all family/close friends but it made me wonder if I was nuts. Nice to see you all have similar sized parties. I thought about it and if you just invited family and 2 friends your guest like would look something like this;
You're up to 25 people with even that modest guest list! And heaven forbid you have cousins, or more than one sibling apiece. I just don't see any way around a 40 person guest list if you family loves close.
Re: s/o 1st birthday. Love the guest counts!
That's us too. Family alone we have 20 people.
We have ton of people too (70-80, possibly more.) I am very close to my aunts, uncles and cousins and they make up about 45 people, and we will be inviting many of our friends.
I love big parties and am excited to get a bunch of people together. I don't pretend that it is all for DD...it is more of a celebration for us and an "occasion" that will get a lot of people together. If we threw a random party some people might not make the trip, but you throw "birthday party" on the invite and suddenly our friends are making 3-4 hour drives to see us. We do the same for our friends' kids birthday - especially first ones. I had an absolute blast last year at a one year old's birthday!

We can never have a small party because with just my immediate family we are at 11 people if my sisters' boyfriends come. We still have to figure out who we are inviting and I'm afraid to see how high the number gets. My stepfather has 7 siblings but luckily they don't all live in the area so some wouldn't be able to come.
We had to cut our list down because we really don't want more than 50. A BIG chunk of our list are strictly family. The rest are friends from church and people that have watched my daughter and love her. I think if they weren't invited they would be insulted. The only way to have a smaller party for us would be to have just my husband, me and the birthday girl. I mean, once you invite the grand parents you have to invite the aunts and uncles and their kids etc. I don't think 50 is ridiculous at all. I am of the opinion that kids should feel like they are the most special person in the world on their birthday and have the best days ever. I make birthdays into a big deal and I think they should be.
