Does your baby sign?

If so, what signs are they using now?

P signs for more, milk, water, food, book, all done, and up.

And I find her sign for "more" so adorable I can't say no. Saturday night she kept asking for more and more noodles...She ate too much and ended up barfing up noodles in the middle of the night. Sorry, DH, I can't walk too well right now, so you have to clean that up Stick out tongue

Re: Does your baby sign?

  • No but we have Baby Einstein Signs and she gets a kick out watching tv babies sign.

I was at the pedi yesterday and he asked me if I did sign language with LO. In a tone of voice that made it seem like I was a bad parent behind the times.

    I stammered out an "Uhh...noo...I should I be...umm?"

Then he said, I never did it with my kids either but I just have to suggest it.

I guess I never really had a reason to try as cool as it is. She's good at pointing to what she wants for the most part and is a demanding little thing so if she something she'll stand and scream at it until someone gets it for her...lol. :)

  • Oh, I forgot to add....We didn't teach it to her, daycare did...In fact, the first time she signed for more, we had no idea what she was doing and had to ask daycare Wink

We did ask them what all signs they were using so we could use them at home with her :)

  • This weekend he signed "all done" and now he does it all.the.time.  He had physical therapy this morning and kept signing "all done" when she had him do stuff that was hard.  It was pretty funny.

I think he sometimes does "more", but it is hard to tell.

ETA:  We are working on these signs: more, milk, eat, all done, water, drink, bath, and sleep.  So far "all done" is the only one we are sure he is doing.

  • DS consistently signs milk and all done, but will also occasionally sign more.  That is all we are working on for now.  Eventually we will add in a few more signs, but I'd like him to get those down really well first.

  • I should add, he thinks the sign for milk means bottle.  Hence us teaching him water and drink.  It would send him into a tail spin.  Ha!

  • Myles has been taught to sign while at daycare. They only sign he really knows how to do is for "more" but hopefully he can learn more.

  • DD doesn't sign for anything....I guess I never thought of it until this post.  When she drops something she puts her hands up and says "uh oh"  cutest thing ever.  Now kinda worried that she doesn't ask for more food or anything.

  • Mostly she just does "milk" although she loves her made up sign for "I want to ride on grandpas shoulders" (taps her head with one hand and reaches with the other)

That's hilarious about PT! Audrey signs more, all done, and water. She, too, signs all done when she doesn't want to do something. It cracks me up. She combines signs at times. At dinner when she doesn't want to drink anymore, she'll sign water... All done... Water... All done. :)

Meh. I wouldn't even worry about it. Every kid has their sign. When mine is done eating she starts throwing stuff on the floor. When she wants more she practically eats her high chair tray.

Sign language is great for a lot people, but it's not something you have to do by any means. I never had a reason to do it, nor do I feel the need at this point and I'm a-okay with that!

He knows more, but really it's just a clap, he doesn't actually know how to put his fingers the right way, and knows all done, however, will never just say "all done" he just knows how to sign it when we say the words. We have not tried to teach him anything else, we only started "more" because he was so whiny in the high chair for more food, which is how I got my H on board... big improvement!

  • H does more, and eat. We are working on all done.. She does a half done so she is slowly getting that one. I love when she signs more and eat :) and she points like a mad woman!

  • Daycare teaches signs, but he doesn't really get it. :) I've seen him do "all done" once or twice.

  • More, all done, drink, eat, icky, puppy, and brush teeth. He was behind on babbling so we started early and were pretty consistent about it. He just started saying a few words so we're not as consistent about it.

  • She signs eat, more and milk. I need to work on some new ones now that she's mastered those.

  • Because Timmy is speech delayed he would come up with his own hand gestures that were pretty close to the real sign. It was kind of crazy how accurate it was.

More, all done, milk and sometimes drink and eat. I really want to introduce please and thank you but those are such abstract concepts I'm not sure how to do it yet.

DH and I were just talking about this the other night...We have been using the sign for please and thank you, but she has not repeated it, nor do I think she has any idea what it relates to.

On a side note, sometimes she will sign 'more' and then 'milk'...I think it's adorable that she is making sign language sentences :)

  • Not really.  We've tried but he only picked up the sign for milk briefly.  He flaps his hands for "all done" (in response to me signing and asking) and he kind of made the sign for more yesterday, but in general it has been a huge fail here.
