For moms who had 2 or more

Was it any harder to get back in shape after the second? With ds, I gained 26lbs (delivered early, so probbaly would have been up to 30 if I got to full-term), and it all came off very easily shortly after just from pumping breastmilk. Now with #2 I'm already up 8lbs, and I haven't changed much of anything. The weight is just piling on! It did with ds early on too, but a little less than this. I'm so worried it will be so much harder this next round. I do plan to breastfeed again, which I know helps, though I can see getting the amount of exercise I want with 2 LOs being a challenge. What has your experience been?

Re: For moms who had 2 or more

  • I gained 51 with DD1 - I had it all plus 20 lbs gone by 6 mo.
I gained 38 w/ DD2 - I had all of it gone by 3 weeks, but didn't tone and did WW & started working out when she was a year.
I gained 54 with DD3 - I ran my first 5k when she was 3 months.  I am not sure how quickly it came off honestly.  I was back to my PP weight by the time she was a year, I know.  I tend to have trouble eating well, working out in the fall/winter months, so I think that played into the slow loss after DD3.

  • Honestly, yes, it has been harder, but not like a billion times harder - just enough to make me notice that it's harder!

With DD, I was 29 when I had her, I gained 34 pounds, and I lost it ALL within a few months, simply by breastfeeding, and then I did start walking and working out regulary after about 3 months. I lost a few more pounds and was under my pre-pregnancy weight, what a pleasant surprise that was:)

With DS, I was 32 when I had him, and I gained 28 pounds. I lost 20 pounds right away, just like I did the last time. But I now have the same 8 pounds on me, 8 months after giving birth. It's not horrible, but it does put me a good size up from where I was pre-pregnancy with #2, so I do want to totally get it off, plus maybe 5 more pounds.

I work out, but it's much harder for me to find the time, what with two kids and working full time. I'm still in that baby-bliss time, where I would rather cuddle with my baby when I get home, than go to the gym, or go for a run. I'm starting to change that thought process, though. I have more energy after I make myself go for a walk or a run, etc. And I take the kids along with me, in my double stroller (see post below), and I have been seeing good results.

You'll lose it. It just might not come off quite as easily, and you might have to watch what you eat more closely (once you are done nursing, if you are). Good luck!

  • this post makes me even more scared to have #2....I gained 76 with #1 and got it all off by 1 year and so scared I will gain that much if not more again.  It was SO depressing

  • I gained almost 60lbs with ds, it came off quickly. The girls, I gained only 20 give or take a pound either way. But I added pounds in between, not good I know. I'm 10 below pp from dd4, but I still have some work to do. It's coming slowly this time, but my time is split between work, home and kids activities. This is a me thing, not a working out isn't working out thing. It is a factor though - more kids means less time.
  • No.

DD1 I gained 60 lbs, and lost around 55lbs before getting pregnant with DD2. (I lost most of that within 6mths of DD1 being born, and didn't do anything special to lose it.

DD2 I gained around 50lbs, and if you look at my ticker you can see what I've lost. I did start doing WW this time when LO was around 2months old. I've found it really manageable and am never hungry and eat "treat" foods every day.

    I EBF both times.

  • I hate to say it but for me, yes, it has been harder to lose the weight with subsequent children.  With DD#1, I was 30 years old - ate pretty much whatever I wanted and only gained 30 lbs.  All but ten came off by 2 weeks PP and the rest came off easily with exercise.

With DD#2, I was 32 and did the same as I did with pregnancy #1 - ate whatever, didn't exercise much if at all and this time I gained close to 40 lbs (granted I was pregnant through holiday and winter time so that didn't help) and by 2 weeks PP 20 had come off and I had 20 left to lose and that took 4-6 months of exercising.

This is my 3rd and final pregnancy, I've just turned 35 and I've really been trying to watch what I eat and exercise.  I've been using the myfitnesspal app on my Iphone to help track what I eat and make better food choices (I have a big sweet tooth when pregnant). The weight is still coming on pretty quick :-/.  I'm up about 27 lbs right now and I asked my OB what the deal is if I'm watching my sweets and carbs and exercising.  She said for some people, the more pregnancies you have with all the hormone changes it confuses your body and your metabolism slows.  It's just the way it is :::::::sigh:::::::.

Regardless, I feel better by exercising and eating healthier so I'm going to continue doing so.  Sometimes I feel discouraged when I see the number on the scale and just want to say eff it and eat a dozen cookies :-p.  I know as long as I'm eating healthy & exercising then I'm doing the best I can.

    Good luck to you!!
