durn government laws!

had our 20 week u/s today.  everything looks beautiful in there!  heart with 4 perfect chambers, all the right numbers of fingers, toes, eyes and organs - BUT - the government just passed a law saying that u/s techs can't directly tell expecting parents the sex of the fetus.  only the primary care person can give the results.  it's probably a good idea, since some communities have been known to abort girl fetuses, but STILL, i HATE to wait!

now we have to wait a few more days to get the results from our midwife. we're still convinced it's a boy, but confirmation will have to wait a few more days.

of course, the best part is that baby is formed perfectly and the exact right size.  everything else is just icing - but i LOVE icing!

Re: durn government laws!

  • Ok, so in the ongoing, "I love to live in ...... [Canada vs. US]" argument, that is one check mark against Canada?  (or would it be in favor in general, just not today)

Gotta say, I'd love your more more Northern latitude cooler summer weather & the longer paid maternity leave that I've been hearing about.  I'd be soooo frustrated tomorrow at my u/s if was told that (esp when my next dr appt is in a month).

  • This happened to me (I live in Ontario!) but I called my doctor's office the next day and they told me over the phone =]

PP, I don't know what cooler summers you are talking about.. we are in the middle of a ridiculous heatwave - it was around 106 here yesterday with the humidity!

I'll still take my paid year off over finding out the sex at the ultrasound anyday ;)

  • I'm in Canada, in a heat wave as well and my Dr. did the ultrasound and told me the gender yesterday.

    Its a boy!!

ETA: I would call your midwives office!  I bet they would tell you over the phone.

  • hey fellow canadians - good idea to call the dr's office.  i'll call the midwives today. the info does transfer pretty fast around these things.

and yeah -  i don't really see this as a bad thing in terms of our medical system - after all, they're trying to equalize treatment and prevent infanticide; can't really argue with that. BUT - it was disapointing, esp as my in-laws were with us, and it would have been nice to share the news with them right there.

in the end  we'll still find out the sex, and the best thing is that we'll still have a healthy baby.

    :)

Except that they aren't preventing infanticide as someone is going to tell them the sex of the baby eventually and even if they passed a law saying no-one can find out that still wouldn't stop people from killing their newborns (as happens in China where it is against the law for doctors to tell women the sex of their babies).  Most times when governments pass these kinds of laws it's to make people feel like they are doing something when reality they aren't changing anything.  I, for one, would prefer government to stay out of my healthcare which sadly is not the path we're on.

Anyway, it will be exciting whenever you find and are able to share your news.  Congrats on a healthy baby.

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
