Last night I was at a green light and the guy didn't move and I lightly tapped his car thinking he was moving-going maybe 2 mph. There was NO damage to my car or his except a dent the size of a pencil eraser but he still wanted a police report. Anyway because of the town I'm in they are required to write a ticket with police reports. That's going to get dropped so I'm not worried about it but what I'm worried about is because his car is a 2 month old lease, he wants to take it to his dealership and get the pencil eraser dent fixed. I think it's ludicrous that he even sees anything-the cop told him like 5 times there was nothing there. I took pictures. Because he has the police report will an insurance company really fix something that small and bill my insurance? I just don't want my rates going up. I feel like if someone came out to look at it from the insurance company they'd be like "um there's nothing here". But I also know that collision repair shops would be happy to have any business possible. Especially if insurance is paying. Any ideas?

Re: Anyone work in insurance? *Updated with PIP*
Suckville! Unfortunately, I think they'll fx it and bill your insurance company.

This unfortunately I would have done the same thing he did because it is a lease it has to be fixed I have the same thing with my car. The car is not his he is basically renting it and has to turn it in in good condition.
And it has to be reported to his leasing company as well.
We lease but with our leasing company we can up up to $300 in repairs that won't count against us. It's for small dents, paint chips, or anything else that is cosmetic. That stinks that he is being so picky. I wouldn't have worried about it.
I work in insurance. Here's my input...every state is different first of all. I worked in N.C. for 3 yrs and an accident under $1299 (somthing like that) was not chargable to you. In Maine an accident under $799 is not chargable. I'm sure the little dent isn't going to increase your premiums depending on what gets paid out. My advice would be to call your insurance company and ask them how much needs to be paid out in liability for the accident to be chargable. If you have any questions before you call I'd be more than happy to help!
oh & yes....he can file a claim against you for the smallest damages. Regardless it was your fault and he can come after you no matter what the damage was. He can't get what is not deserved though, only the damages caused to his vehicle.

Yeah but 2 months into his lease is a little soon to be having dings and dents ( especially ones he didn't cause).Plus we all know how men are about their cars. lol
Agreed. And I would hands down file a claim and get my damage fixed. I wouldn't want a new car I've only owned for 2 months to have a dent in it.

When I leased, anything (scratch, paint chip, ding) that could be covered by a credit card size piece of paper, didn't count against me. I would believe that this ding falls into that category.
Sorry you're dealing with this though.
The company I work for is also an auto body shop, honestly that bumper may need to be replaced. It may look minor but if it's plastic it will probably be replaced. That's like $1000 repair. NY I know is high. So maybe less expensive pending on where you are. It definitely sucks.
I used to sell insurances in the DC Metro. Here everything is chargeable, no matter what the dollar amount is. When you renew, your rates could potentially go up. This area seems to be harda$$es compared to Maine - ha! I agree with Meg, call your agent and ask. They may not tell you definitely yes or no, but they can give you some better insight. GL!

This. I bought my car (no lease) and was backed into in a Starbucks parking lot. There were more/bigger scratches on my car than you showed in the pictures (small scratches covering the area of a DVD or CD size), but they weren't able to just buff and paint over it. My bumper wasn't plastic, but I still had to have the whole bumper replaced because of the way it had been painted before - any new paint would wind up coming right off. The guy who backed into me elected to pay my body shop out of pocket rather than going through insurance.
WOW..that's crazy that everything is chargable! I believe it though and bet that's the way it is in most states. That's why calling is definitely best!

100% agree! "Minor damage" in our area is usually $1200 average. I think that scratch is pretty noticable too and wouldn't want that to go unfixed! We used to tell clients to get an estimate first and now we know it'll most likely exceed the deductible so we just file it.

The thing is there isn't a scratch...that's glare from my phone. The only "damage" is that little bump towards the top of the bumper almost at the edge of the pic.
I lease. Every lease is written differently. I think I'm allowed a 1/2in dent without penalty. But if I was rear ended in my brand new car, I would have the person that wasn't paying attention and hit me pay to repair any damage. Guess that makes me a d-bag.
You can pay out of pocket if it is less than your deductible or will cause your insurance to increase.
Because this was a much better idea than tapping your horn to get him to move. You hit him because you wanted him to go and now you get to pay the consequences. It isn't his fault that you are a moron; you are the douchebag in this situation. This entire post makes you sound like an spoiled little brat.
I'm just fine using this name, thanks. I've messed up plenty of times and I have dealt with the consequences of my actions. I have never assumed that the 2-ton vehicle in front of me would magically move if I started driving and I have never thought it was "douchy" to get mad at someone for wanting the dent taken out of their two month old car.
When you quoted, you took out the part where I said I thought I saw him start to move. Nice try.
And really I'm just wanting to know if my rates are going to go up...what's done is done at this point and I can't control what he is going to do...I just want an idea of if my insurance is going to go up...but feel free to flame away with your AE.
Is this our first AE? Wish it was more fun than this. You could have just posted that under your real SN.
This exactly. My lease got hit a while back, and while the girl that hit eme didn't think there was enough damage to worry about, I was definitely worrie about it inmy 6 month old "borrowed" car. She moaned and groaned about it, but eventually turned it in to insurance. I now own, and would still make her pay to have it fixed because I wouldn't expect to not have to get someone's car fixed if I hit it, and I like my cars in the best condition possible.
I totally get that but in this instance the cop couldn't even see anything.
Couldnt get my phone to edit, but I wanted to add that there was about $600 worth of damage, and my insurance (California) tried to convince her to pay OOP because $600 wasn't worth her rates going up...
This translates to: "I wasn't paying attention to the world/cars around me, only the green light and myself."
It is really tough to tell in a photo...I hope you're not getting screwed.
