I was on the elevator at work today, talking to a co-worker about my babies turning one soon. When I got off, a man approached me (he doesn't work in my office but I see him in the building now and then) and our conversation went something like this:
Him: I didn't know you had a new baby!
Me: I have two, actually.
Him: Twins?!
Me: Yep.
Him: Were you surprised?
Me: ... you mean when they were born...?
Him: Yeah, did you know?
I just told him that yes, we knew before they were born and left it at that.
Re: Weird questions/comments - this one takes the cake
Dx DOR (AMH .49), Stage 3/4 Endo, Septate Uterus
After 2 years, numerous tests, abdonimal surgery, and 2 IVF cycles, we are so grateful to be expecting.
Transferred 2 "perfect" 8-cell embies 6/12. Beta 1 6/25: 472! Beta 2 6/27: 1055!
First u/s shows TRIPLETS! WHAT?!?! Both embies stuck and one split. OMG
Levi, Henry, and Amelia were born healthy at 34w3d.
Oh yeah, DH has a co-worker who has boy/girl twins that are in their 30s now. He had no idea they were having twins until she delivered. And apparently the dad wasn't in the room during the delivery. He said it was quite a shock!
I'd say he's in his fifties. Yeah, even if things like that happened years ago, I'd still think older folks would realize we have the technology to know so much more before babies are born.

My blog * We made the national news!
Me too. Must be something in the water around here.
Someone asked me the other day which one smiles more. Um, the one that you're not touching, weird lady?
haha yeah I've heard different versions of that myself. Of course I knew, sheesh I was enormous for how far along I was even without u/s I think I would have known there was more than one in there!

I don't think people really think very often before they speak especially around twins. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I will be walking with them in the stroller ( it's a DSNG or the twin train as we call it:) ) and people ask if they are twins? Of course they are granted he's a few pounds bigger but still people!!!
This is my favorite, I get it all the time too. Seriously?!
I think I'm going to start telling people "No, I stole the second one from the hospital when I was there giving birth. It just seemed easier than going through another pregnancy".
I was asked this! I can't remember where now, but it went the same way - asking if we were surprised. I said "yes we really were when we found out." He said "so you knew before they were born?"
My mom is a sonagrapher. She has been doing it since about 1977, so the technology has been around like Mrs. Lee said. Whether it was routine to get ultrasounds during pregnancy at that time I am not sure. I would have to ask her when that came about. I know the early days of ultrasound were no where near the technology today, so I suppose they could have been missed even with early ultrasound.
Alos, re: the "twins?" comments. We were asked that no less than 9 times at Costco a few weeks ago. We each had one in a Baby Bjorn...I suppose they could have been babies from two different mothers, but that would be the last thing I would assume.
Boy/girl twins born at 37w1d and 37w2d
Here too. When I get asked that by other moms I find it really strange! If you've had a kid in the last decade, you know I had an ultrasound so of course I knew before birth!
I was asked if we knew ahead of time on more than one occassion. I understand that people used to not know until delivery - even know families like that (of course delivery was 30 years ago).
But when my post partum nurse asked me if I was surprised to find out I was having twins or if I knew before the delivery - I considered checking out of that hospital.
