Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Suddenly a picky eater!

(This is my first de-lurking post, so hi!)

DS used to eat anything I put in front of him and now suddenly he's refusing all the things he used to love.  He just refused hard boiled egg, carrots, and sweet potato.  He managed to have half a banana that he's now throwing away in disgust and he's eating some green peas and almond butter toast.  Really the toast is the only thing he's actually interested in.

Has this happened to anyone else?  Hopefully it's just a phase!

Re: Suddenly a picky eater!

  • It was in my pedi's handout today that between 10 and 15 months kids will go through a phase where they don't like anything/become picky. The advice was to keep offering what you want them to eat but throw some stuff they will eat in with it. That way you're not playing short order cook but there's still some dinner going down. :) It then concluded with a no toddler ever starved himself.

  • Mine has refused some of her stuff lately also. We're still eating purees. I'm wondering what is going on also.

I can think of a couple possible reasons.  My son has always eaten just about anything we offer until we got to table foods.  I asked his pedi, public health nurse, and OT for their best advice.

Reason 1: LO is practicing control over his diet.  He decides what to eat and when and will eat what he feels like eating.  Solution: keep offering a variety and be patient.  May even try baking some of the refused food into a bread/muffin/pancake/etc. and serving that.

Reason 2: LO is not chewing properly and does not really know what to do with the non-melt-in-your-mouth textures.  (This was my kid.  He looked like he was chewing, but upon closer examination, he was mashing the grains with his tongue and spitting anything that didn't mash out.) Solution: Practice chewing by feeding foods closer to the side of his mouth so he has to use his jaw and tongue to move the food around.

    GL!

    P.S. Welcome to the board!

Wow that's really interesting!  I think DS is actually doing both of those things.  He used to just open his mouth for anything I held up to him, spoon or table food.  But now for the first time he's mashing his lips together and ducking his head to the side.  And he also "chews" by mashing stuff to the roof of his mouth, I have noticed that.  I'm going to try that offering food towards the side method.  Thanks!

  • We went through 2 phases of eating strikes that lasted about 5 days or so a piece, one at around 4 months and another around 8 months. The first time I took him to the pedi because I thought there had to be something wrong but she said that sometimes babies just do this and not to worry, he wont starve himself. She said he'll make up for it when he's done and sure enough, he was a black hole of food the next week. Turns out he was cutting his first two teeth. Next time this happened, he cut 4. Just try different things and let him eat what he will and offer more milk if he'll take it. Keep an eye on his temp, if it goes up over 102/103 he may be getting a little sick/ear infection and that might be why he's refusing, but otherwise you'lre just going to have to ride it out : Hopefully it doesn't last too long.
