Re: Waiting To Adopt Check-in! Monday 7/23

  • 1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? And what age(s)?   Domestic infant adoption

    2) Where in the process are you? I just completed my first home study visit!  We have one more this coming up Saturday and then they will finalize it within 4 weeks so we hope to have our parentprofiles.com profile active by end of August/early September.

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate? Home visit #1 down!

    4) Most encouraging moment last week?  As we build our profile for birth moms, it just makes me realize how fortunate we are (despite IF) and what a great home we will provide for a baby.

    5) Biggest challenge of this week?  Nothing this week. :)

    7) QOTW: Does your LO have a name yet? Or are you planning on naming him/her when you meet him/her? Share the names you're thinking about or names that you like (if you're comfortable doing that!)! I've liked the name Lucas for several years now so I'm pretty sure it'll stick if we adopt a boy.  And Henry for his middle name in honor of my grandfather.  For a girl, we can't agree on a name yet.

  • I love this, it is such a good way to get to know everyone!

    1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? And what age(s)? Domestic infant adoption

    2) Where in the process are you? Research and reading mode : )

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate? I finished "You Can Adopt" and "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Adoption"  The Idiot's Guide was hopelessly out of date so I need to see if I can find a more recent copy at a different library.

    4) Most encouraging moment last week? Reading about Jillianmb's trip to Russia - prayers for her!!  It's really great to see people's adoptions moving forward step by step.

    5) Biggest challenge of this week? Trying to figure out how on earth we will afford this, and wondering if any expectant parent would ever choose us.

    6) Anything else you want to share? Nope : )

    7) QOTW: Does your LO have a name yet? Or are you planning on naming him/her when you meet him/her? Share the names you're thinking about or names that you like (if you're comfortable doing that!)!   I'm nervous about getting my heart set on a name, because if I have a relationship with the expectant parents prior to the birth I want to be open about choosing a name together, in case they want to do that.  If we do not get to meet the expectant parents and they put a name down on the birth certificate I'd love to use that as a middle name at least.  That being said, Leo is my absolute favorite boy name and I really like Arya for a girl : )

  • 1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? And what age(s)? Domestic Infant Adoption, not gender- or race-specific

    2) Where in the process are you? Waiting to be chosen!

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate? We put the crib up this past weekend! That was fun! The kid's room (they will be sharing) is a lot less cramped than I imagined it being so that's cool! We are also getting ready for a yard sale this weekend which will be nice to get a bunch of un-needed JUNK out of here before we have a bunch of baby stuff out again!

Oh! AND I ordered an adoptive baby book to start filling out.

    4) Most encouraging moment last week?  I feel like I'm getting a second wind on this whole process. I've met a lot of adoptive moms lately and in talking with them and hearing their journeys, it just makes me feel a lot less stagnant- I feel refreshed in the whole process. I think that for me, "doing nothing" while waiting is torture, whereas if I can be actively doing something (making room for baby, etc), the waiting is easier. It makes it less "waiting" and more "preparing".

I also feel like the longer we wait, the more I'm learning. I'm learning more about the adoptive parent I want to be, things I want to share vs things I want to keep private, how I want to handle things, words I want to use/not use... maybe that sounds weird, but I feel like the longer I wait, the more research I do and the more prepared I feel as an adoptive parent.

    5) Biggest challenge of this week?  NAR: We had Vacation Bible School at the church where I work/attend so that was CRAAAAZY! We had over 350 kids and it was just NUTS all week long! It's way fun, but I'm glad it's over!

    6) Anything else you want to share? I'm glad to have ventured back over to the bump and found this board! I used to be in the EFF board a lot and a small portion of that group moved to a Facebook group so it's nice to be back over here and "meeting" new people who are in the same situation as me!

    7) QOTW: Does your LO have a name yet? Or are you planning on naming him/her when you meet him/her? Share the names you're thinking about or names that you like (if you're comfortable doing that!)!

We have only really talked about boy names (I think I just feel like it will be a boy!) and we like Miles, Ben(jamin), Zeke (Ezekiel) and Carter (family name) so we may use some combination of those names. We have been making a list in a notebook and plan to just take that list with us when we go to meet our baby- and decide then!

  • 1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? And what age(s)?

International; preferably a toddler or preschool-age child, but we're open to 0-7

    2) Where in the process are you?

    Research phase

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate?

Not about me, but my BIL and SIL were just approved by USCIS to adopt two children and should be matched in the near future!

    4) Most encouraging moment last week?

Seeing DH take care of DD and a friend's baby when we babysat over the weekend.

    5) Biggest challenge of this week?

Realizing how challenging taking care of two will be!

    6) Anything else you want to share?

    Nope!

    7) QOTW: Does your LO have a name yet? Or are you planning on naming him/her when you meet him/her? Share the names you're thinking about or names that you like (if you're comfortable doing that!)!

It's going to depend on how old the child we adopt is, where we adopt from (how pronounceable their current name is), and several other factors.  My favourite names are Luca and Matilda, so those might be considered.

Share the names you're thinking about or names that you like (if you're comfortable doing that!)! We have a boys name picked and a girls name picked that we like the most.  We are still tossing around other names.

  • Gosh it feels weird to be doing this- like it's real!

    1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? And what age(s)? After a successful Domestic NB adoption, we are now exploring IA (specifically Colombia) and their infant program (0-1 year old).

    2) Where in the process are you? Trying to pick an agency (which is a lot harder then I anticipated)

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate? We just celebrated our daughters first Adoption Day anniversary, which was big for me as it means that for no reason what so ever can her adoption be annulled at this point.  (There weren't really an real reasons it could...but still).

We also started fundraising for baby #2!

    4) Most encouraging moment last week?

I hosted my first "party" fundraising for baby #2, and our friends and family were just SO supportive to hear about our adoption plans, the response has just been so heart warming and has reminded me of what a huge  support system we have.

    5) Biggest challenge of this week?  Trying to pick an agency.  It's nuts!

    6) Anything else you want to share? I don't think so :)

    7) QOTW: Does your LO have a name yet? Or are you planning on naming him/her when you meet him/her? Share the names you're thinking about or names that you like (if you're comfortable doing that!)!

The only name I'm 100% solid on is a boy name.  It would be Robert Raymond after my dad.  Girls names we like: Madison, Thalia, and Lillian.  But, we liked those names before DD was born, and her name is not one of them, so who knows!

If you're Christian, I recommend Lifeline.  I work with their social workers and administrators from time to time, and I've been very impressed.  My BIL and SIL are using them for an Ethiopian adoption at the moment.

  • 1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? And what age(s)? : Domestic infant adoption

    2) Where in the process are you?: saving $$, hoping to apply/start homestudy process in Januaryish

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate?: not really!

    4) Most encouraging moment last week?  : I can't think of anything

    5) Biggest challenge of this week?  : staying focused on my schoolwork.  All I want to do is think about baby stuff, but that's unproductive at this point.

    6) Anything else you want to share? : I can't wait until my summer class is done, DH and I are going to have some discussions about different aspects of our homestudy paper work, baby plans, etc.

    7) QOTW: Does your LO have a name yet? Or are you planning on naming him/her when you meet him/her? Share the names you're thinking about or names that you like (if you're comfortable doing that!)! : We have had a boy's name picked out since before we were married (I think it was before... if not, shortly after).  We go back and forth on girl names a LOT.  We will also have to consider whether the name(s) we pick suit our LO once we meet him/her, and perhaps have some input from the BPs if everyone's comfortable with that.

  • 1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? And what age(s)? Domestic Infant Adoption

    2) Where in the process are you? Turning in our official application this Wednesday!

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate? Our dog had his first in-home training session with a trainer and has already made significant progress in his behavior. We HAVE to get him trained or our homestudy process could be a disaster.

    4) Most encouraging moment last week?  Our dog was sitting in my bestie's lap on Friday night when she came over for dinner. Never ever happened before.

    5) Biggest challenge of this week?  Getting all our paperwork finalized to submit the application. We're finding we aren't as organized as we thought and it's taking FOREVER to gather all the necessary information.

    6) Anything else you want to share? We are officially starting the process of turning our 2nd bedroom/home office into an area a baby will be able to comfortably inhabit! :)

    7) QOTW: Does your LO have a name yet? Or are you planning on naming him/her when you meet him/her? Share the names you're thinking about or names that you like (if you're comfortable doing that!)! We have names picked out, but we're obviously a ways out from this actually happening, so we're choosing not to really share those yet in case our minds change.

  • 1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? And what age(s)? Adotption from foster care; hoping for 2 sibs under 5

    2) Where in the process are you? Our homestudy is completed, classes have been taken.  We are waiting for the Central Office of DCF to sign off on it b/c I work for the state.

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate? We got some baby items, such as a toddler bed and bookcase.

    4) Most encouraging moment last week?  Seeing the bookcase set up.

    5) Biggest challenge of this week?  How long it is taking!!!

    6) Anything else you want to share? Not yet

    7) QOTW: Does your LO have a name yet? Or are you planning on naming him/her when you meet him/her? Share the names you're thinking about or names that you like (if you're comfortable doing that!)!  We are considering keeping their birth names.  If they are old enough, we may ask them.

  • 1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? And what age(s)?

    Domestic Infant Adoption

    2) Where in the process are you?

We have an approved homestudy and now we're trying to finish our dear birthmother letter, then we'll be actively waiting!

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate?

Not really. Our homestudy's been approved for almost a month now so we're really frustrated trying to get this dear birthmother letter approved.

    4) Most encouraging moment last week?

With all of this frustration over the dear birthmother letter, I'm actually getting excited to just...wait. I'm sure at some point during the wait I will wish I could DO something, but right now I'm actually looking forward to being able to enjoy our last months (hopefully) as a childless couple. We're thinking about the nursery, looking at restaurants and shows we want to go to, and planning a trip for the two of us...just a sort of "bucket list" before kids. Hopefully I can keep this mentality during the wait :)

    5) Biggest challenge of this week?

Trying to deal with the feedback from our dear birthmother letter. I'm getting so annoyed with how little this actually sounds like us anymore.

    6) Anything else you want to share?

    Not really...

    7) QOTW: Does your LO have a name yet? Or are you planning on naming him/her when you meet him/her? Share the names you're thinking about or names that you like (if you're comfortable doing that!)!

For a boy I like Nathaniel, Liam, Caed and Wyatt. DH likes Nathaniel but not so much the others. We haven't narrowed down girl names at all really. I do like Charlotte, Cecily, Coralia, and Avery but for some reason DH and I don't really discuss girl names that often. I think we've both always thought we would have a boy first! We would like to use a family middle name but would definitely consider the birthparents input on names too.

    1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? And what age(s)? Newborn domestic adoption

    2) Where in the process are you? We just finished our home study and went active last week.

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate? Home study done!

    4) Most encouraging moment last week?   Our profile is being shown to a BM this week.

    5) Biggest challenge of this week?  DH's family is a little less supportive about the adoption than we thought.  We need to talk with them more about everyone's expectations.

    6) Anything else you want to share?

    7) QOTW: Does your LO have a name yet? Or are you planning on naming him/her when you meet him/her? Share the names you're thinking about or names that you like (if you're comfortable doing that!)! No name get, but we did start talking about it.  We both have a feeling like our first will be a boy, so those names are coming easier right now.

    2) Where in the process are you?  We are finishing up our initial paper work and have done all of our trainings except for CPR/1st aid which we will do this friday. After that we will be starting our home study.

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate?  nope.

    4) Most encouraging moment last week?  Going through a support team training with some people close in our life.

    5) Biggest challenge of this week?   Getting stressed and overwhelmed when trying to figure out which CPR/1st aid class to take.

One thing that bums me out about adopting out of foster care is that we will not be able to name our child. It makes me a little sad, but it's okay.

  • 1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? And what age(s)?   Foster to adopt

    2) Where in the process are you? We went to our orientation and are on the paperwork train now!  IMPACT classes are in September, the first two weekends.

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate? It's a small thing, but we're glad to have the orientation done.

    4) Most encouraging moment last week?  Just moving forward a bit

    5) Biggest challenge of this week?   Our SW was a little discouraging about foster to adopt, as opposed to just foster.  I was originally open to fostering just to foster, without necessarily adopting, but we've had another miscarriage in the last month, so we need to heal before we sign up for more emotionally challenging situations (not that foster to adopt isn't challenging and risky, but you KWIM).

    7) QOTW: Does your LO have a name yet? Or are you planning on naming him/her when you meet him/her? Share the names you're thinking about or names that you like (if you're comfortable doing that!)!  We will most likely end up with a child who already has a name, but if ever have a baby (bio or adopted), we have chosen Mary Grace for a girl.  Mary means a long-awaited child, and Grace is obvious.  Sounds about right.  The boy name is totally up in the air.

  • 1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? And what age(s)?

IA from Uganda (LO at least 6 mos younger than E)

    2) Where in the process are you?

    Just submitted our I-600A Friday!

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate?

    See above. We're so excited!

    4) Most encouraging moment last week?

Getting our homestudy in the mail the day after it was signed. We [<3] our agency!

    5) Biggest challenge of this week?

We're getting geared up for our first wait - the I-600A could take 4 weeks or 11 weeks, and you just never know. Good practice, I guess?

    6) Anything else you want to share?

Nothing other than I had a big "wow, this is really happening" moment this week after I left the post office. Are we really going to adopt?!? Can it be true?!? That kinda thing.

    7) QOTW: Does your LO have a name yet? Or are you planning on naming him/her when you meet him/her? Share the names you're thinking about or names that you like (if you're comfortable doing that!)!

We want to consider LO's birth name. A lot of Ugandan names are traditional Bible names. If we don't hate it (or think our child might feel conspicuous with it), we'll probably keep it.  But who knows?!? I have a feeling we'll have a boy, but I've always wanted a daughter to name Miriam and call her my Miri. We'll see!

After searching and searching, back with Uganda but with our homestudy agency's program.
    Homestudy complete July 19
USCIS I-600A submitted July 20. Biometrics appointments arrived Aug 17; fingerprinted Aug 21; 171H received Sept 25th. On the wait list Oct 1st: #18. By Jan 25th, we're #13!
    Come home, baby A!
    1. What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? And what age(s)?
      Transracial domestic infant

    2. Where in the process are you?
      Documentation... then homestudy!

    3. Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate?
Funds are still coming in from our silent auction fundraiser, which is awesome!

    4. Most encouraging moment last week?
Nothing in particular. I actually had a pretty emotional week... The fundraising is making me tired, and a lot of people have been asking me about our progress. I sometimes just want to tell them that it would be going a lot better if they would just give me $15k. Ha.

    5. Biggest challenge of this week?
Staying positive, getting enough sleep, and getting my work done.
QOTW: Does your LO have a name yet? Or are you planning on naming him/her when you meet him/her?
I'm trying not to get too set on a particular name, since I want his/her bio parents to be involved in the process (if they want to be). That said, for a girl, we like Georgiana (nn Gia). For a boy, we like Frederic, August, and Desmond.

    7) QOTW: Does your LO have a name yet? Or are you planning on naming him/her when you meet him/her? Share the names you're thinking about or names that you like (if you're comfortable doing that!)!

One thing that bums me out about adopting out of foster care is that we will not be able to name our child. It makes me a little sad, but it's okay.

I totally empathize with the bolded; it does feel like a bit of a loss.

    I third this.

  • 1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? And what age(s)?

    Open domestic infant adoption.

    2) Where in the process are you?

Waiting, waiting, waiting.  Specifically, 8 months this past Sunday.

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate?

We got our 4th potential matching call yesterday.

    4) Most encouraging moment last week?

Nothing much last week, just generally feeling more comfortable with the wait.

    5) Biggest challenge of this week?

Trying not to get too excited.  This is the first matching call where the mom is still pregnant, and we were really hoping for that situation to arise.  Plus, since with all the others, they'd already signed the consent to adopt, we kind of knew the latest possible "due date" for their decision.

    6) Anything else you want to share?

    Not especially.

    7) QOTW: Does your LO have a name yet? Or are you planning on naming him/her when you meet him/her? Share the names you're thinking about or names that you like (if you're comfortable doing that!)!
If we're matched with a girl, she'll be Katherine Paige, if a boy, he'll be  Joshua Duff (a family name).
  • 1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? And what age(s)? Domestic Infant

    2) Where in the process are you?  Starting our home study.  First meeting is this Thursday!

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate?  We got our fingerprinting done last week, and our physicals are tonight.

    4) Most encouraging moment last week?  We were happy to get our social worker assigned so we can move forward.

    5) Biggest challenge of this week?  Dealing with my husband's ex-wife to get my step-daughter's physical scheduled.  She holds the insurance and the doctor is close to her house (we are a half hour away).  She hasn't been very cooperative, but she promised to get it done on the 30th, so we'll see.

    6) Anything else you want to share?  Not right now

    7) QOTW: Does your LO have a name yet? Or are you planning on naming him/her when you meet him/her? Share the names you're thinking about or names that you like (if you're comfortable doing that!)!

My husband and I have avoided talking about names for the most part through our IF battle.  The few times we did talk about it we didn't get very far, and we really haven't gotten back to it now that we are adopting.  But I love the name Bailey for a girl, and Savannah and Marissa.  I think he likes Bailey.  For some reason I am bad at coming up with boy's names though.  Once we are approved and waiting, I will likely get bored and start picking up baby name books.  :)

    2) Where in the process are you? Waiting, working on applying to a second agency (nationwide vs. 1st agency which was just regional)3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate? 2/3 of our packet in the mail to the new agency and our social worker called to tell me she received my request to send a copy of our home study 4) Most encouraging moment last week?  So busy at work lately I can't even remember last week.5) Biggest challenge of this week?  All work related stress...
    6) Anything else you want to share? 7) QOTW: Does your LO have a name yet? Or are you planning on naming him/her when you meet him/her? Share the names you're thinking about or names that you like (if you're comfortable doing that!)!  No names now, DH is hesitant to even discuss it, not wanting to "jinx" the adoption process. (experience of things not working out for us has his guard up)

    2) Where in the process are you? waiting impatiently for over 7 months now, not matched

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate?  no

    4) Most encouraging moment last week?  our agency is getting "busier"

    5) Biggest challenge of this week?  I've been pretty down.  I know our wait hasn't been long compared to many others, but I'm having a hard time with it.

    6) Anything else you want to share?

    7) QOTW: Does your LO have a name yet? Or are you planning on naming him/her when you meet him/her? Share the names you're thinking about or names that you like (if you're comfortable doing that!)!  We have first names for a boy & girl but are still debating middle names.  I know that could change once we meet a BM.  We don't plan to share names with anyone until after our baby is in our arms.  For now, we're telling everyone that our names are "Nebuchanezzar Robitussin Synthroid (last name)" for a boy and "Peristalsis Cleopatra Phoenix (last name)" for a girl.  It's kinda fun driving everyone crazy.  :)

After 5.5 years of loss, heartbreak, and empty arms, our dreams were fulfilled through the beautiful, selfless gift of adoption. We are amazingly blessed!

  • 1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? And what age(s)?

    Domestic infant adoption

    2) Where in the process are you?

We're almost 9 months into our wait. Renewing our homestudy now.

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate?

    nope.

    4) Most encouraging moment last week?

     none

    5) Biggest challenge of this week?

Our caseworker will be at our house for a few hours Thursday morning to renew our homestudy. I know we don't need to go crazy cleaning, but with 2 young kids in the house, there's clutter everywhere!

    6) Anything else you want to share?

Our son starts kindergarten in less than a month, sob! I can't wrap my mind around this; it seems like he was just born a few months ago. :(

    7) QOTW: Does your LO have a name yet? Or are you planning on naming him/her when you meet him/her? Share the names you're thinking about or names that you like (if you're comfortable doing that!)!

I have a list of boy and girl names I like, but DH isn't interested in discussing at this point. Our agency encourages birth parents to name their baby, and we're just going to go along for the ride. Unless it's a really bad name we'll probably keep it.
