Any pregnant runners with pelvic/hip pain?

I've been running throughout the pregnancy with relatively little discomfort... until now. After 5 miles on Saturday, I had moderate pain in my groin area (mostly left side) that made it somewhat painful to walk later that day and somewhat on Sunday. Monday felt great and I worked out on the elliptical. Tuesday morning I ran 3 miles, but afterwards I got the same groin area pain and it was even more intense than before. Ironically, going up/down stairs feels fine, just walking or putting too much weight on my left leg hurts. I laid off all exercise today, and it feels better but still hurts.

If it's SPD like Dr. Google says, I realize it won't go away but will it at least be manageable enough to do some kind of exercise? Obviously I probably won't be running anymore, but I'm hoping I can walk, swim, or maybe do the elliptical or bike at the gym. Did a band help you? I will seriously go insane if I can't at least walk during this pg. Any advice or words of encouragement?  TIA

Re: Any pregnant runners with pelvic/hip pain?

  • I just started getting leg pain in my right leg through my foot, to the point I would have to stop running after 1.5 miles.  However my last 2 runs have been ok, and I started wearing compression socks.  Sometimes I'll get hip pain when I stretch afterwards, but nothing like what SPD sounds like.  Maybe try taking a few days off, and maybe ice....and the heat right before you start up again!  I know how frustrating it can be!

  • I had SPD, it came on half way thru pregnancy.  I would suggest NOT running anymore....anything that aggravates it makes it worse.  I had to see a chiro after the birth cause it still didn't go away.  after 6 months of chiro sessions it FINALLY went a way.  I never thought the day would come.  I would feel it all the time:  standing on one leg, sneezing, working my abs, running, opening legs to have sex,  the list goes on.....

The same thing happened to me when I was running about the same time in my pregnancy that you are now.  I couldn't run anymore, but have taken on walking big time.  Also, I can still swim really comfortably.  You can definitely still find exercises that work for you and your body.  You'll have that baby and be back to running in no time!  I know I can't wait to be running again!
