Italy v. Spain...anyone have any recs

DH, DD, and I are planning a little vacation this October. We narrowed it down to two places Spanish Rivera/Madrid or Rome/Almafi coast. DH and I never had our honeymoon (we were in the middle of another move) so this will be our first family vacation. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

keylime and sarahmaria, I know you all will have great advice :)

    • I'm biased, but I would choose Spain in a heartbeat!  I've always thought that October would be the perfect month to visit Southern Spain...still warm but not insanely hot.

Places I love:  Barcelona (but it's pricey), Costa Blanca (on the Mediterranean, near Valencia and Alicante...I lived there for a semester and can give you more info on the little towns and touristy places.  I'm not as familiar with southern Spain, but you can pick a "home base" and go visit all the "typical" Spanish cities (Granada, Sevilla, C?rdoba) very easily.  Madrid is one of my favorite cities, and you can do a ton of day trips...or just chill in the parks.

I also love the northern coast (Santiago de Compostela and Bilbao are both great places to visit, but they wouldn't necessarily be warm and sunny in October.)  You'll be in Scotland for 3-4 years right?  Maybe another trip :)

If you decide on Spain, let me know...I can pass on all my favorite hotels (not fancy, but reasonably priced), travel tips (buses and trains are amazing there!) and restaurants/bakeries!

    • I lived in Madrid for 6 months when I was a junior in college. It is a very big city which can be overwhelming, but there is a lot to do and see. The public transportation is pretty easy to navigate and being a single woman there at the time, I always felt pretty safe. I've also been to Rome. Obviously, there is a ton of history there (true of Madrid as well). It was an amazing experience to be there and actually see these things that I read about in history books, but I have to say it was a very dirty city. I remember being at the top of St. Peter's Cathedral and looking out over a layer of smog. In contrast, Madrid is a very clean city (at least it was when I was there in 1997-98). Whatever you decide, I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time. Me, I'm partial to Madrid.

    • Haven't been to Spain but LOVED Italy! Rome is an amazing City and it's easy to get to the coast and enjoy everything it has to offer.

    • I haven't been to Spain, but I went to Rome in 2010 and have been dying to go back. I loved the history, food, wine, etc. I have never looked at pizza the same!

Thanks ladies :) right now I am pulling for Spain and DH is all about Italy, too bad DD can't talk yet to be the tiebreaker.

Keylime- yes we will be here for three to four years, so hopefully we will get the chance to make a couple trips!

    • Spain did beat Italy in soccer.  Maybe that could be your tiebreaker Wink

    • I have no frame of reference since I've never been to Spain, but Italy is freakin amazing.  We went 2 years ago (did Venice, Florence, Amalfi Coast, and Rome) and we are DYING to go back.
