good morning all: I have to go into work today and tell them "something" about why I will not be into to work the rest of this week. I'm part-time and only work 3 shifts this week, today, Wed and Fri. Our ER is Wed evening but we need to travel four hours away so working Wed is certainly out and then depending on how our luck works out....the ET I guess will be Fri?
I will say my work place is very understanding and I am only part time, but I still feel bad. Do I start by saying I will be unable to work my shifts this week due to a specialist app and then a possible procedure out of the city? I really don't want to tell them that it is for IVF.

This exactly. If there is one boss you can confide in I'd go that route. Otherwise the specialist scenerio should work well.
Good luck!

Unless you are doinga 2dt, your ET would be Saturday. If that is the case and you don't want to out yourself, call in sick on Wed and work Friday. Then drive either Fri night or early Sat morning for your ET.
If you are doinga 2dt, you'll either need to come up with a "virus" or say you are having medical treatment and leave it at that.

My husband's been telling people he's had surgery from a hernia instead of his varicocele. Would something like that work? You could let them know it's a medical procedure and you won't be able to come in / lift things etc. It's not entirely far off. It can be outpatient fixing, too.
Sorry. This is hands down the hardest part with concocting stories and going through the play book of excuses. Since an ER is kind of a one off (hopefully!) you can blame it on something else, like a hernia. If you are in a tough spot you can always blame it on that again since people will know you have a history and may not ask too many questions.
