Two Under 2

3u3 - advice??

Anyone out there with 3 under/in 3 years? Advice?

We have a just-turned 3 year old, a 19 month old and are due in 3 weeks with baby #3. Neither of the toddlers are potty trained and we're going through sleep issues as the older one asked to move into a bed and the younger one started climbing out of her crib. The older one will start preschool within a couple weeks of the baby coming, so lots of changes!

We are keeping our nanny while I am home on leave, will have some help from family and DH will be home some. Just looking for general recommendations on going from two to three kids, especially where they are all pretty young with lots of needs!

Re: 3u3 - advice??

  • I'm going to have 3u3 too!! :D  Interested to see what advice you get...I need some too.

I'm hoping going from 2 to 3 is easier than going from 1 to 2...

  • Two to three was was easier than one to Two, even when they were all under the age of 3.  My oldest was 3 and 2 months and my youngest was 17 1/2 months when my son was born.  My husband went back to work days after #3 was born and I didn't have my MIL or my mother or even a nanny at home to help me.

My best advice is to just keep your schedule as best as you can and try not to stress about things.  Your older kids will adjust just fine.  If anything it will be harder for you to adjust than them.  In fact bringing #3 home didn't even phase the older one at all.  It was a little harder for the 17 1/2 month old due to jealousy but even then it wasn't that big of a deal.

If you have lots of help (which is sounds like you will) I really wouldn't worry about anything.

Good luck! You can't be less prepared than I am, just a couple weeks away from this adventure :)

Thank you so much - this is really encouraging! I have heard that it's easier to go to #3 (and beyond) than adjusting to 1 or 2 ... but I also know we'll be outnumbered which is a bit scary. I'm glad you've had a good experience and really appreciate your response!!

I did 3u3.  IMO if you can handle 2u2, then 3u3 won't be that bad.  I have to seriously say that it has been way easier than I thought.  I work from home with all 3 here so that was my biggest challenge.  I did have my oldest potty trained already but that really wasn't a big deal.

All in all, you will do great and don't worry, it falls into place :)

  • I am going to have 3u3 also (maybe even 3u2)!  DS1 will be 2 on 11/18, DS2 will be 1 on 11/9 and I am due with #3 11/23.

I am glad to hear that most people are saying it is not as difficult to go from 2 to 3 as it is 1 to 2.  I will be a SAHM when this baby is born, so I am working on getting my older two onto a schedule now.  I would love to hear what other advice people give!

  • I will have 3u3 in December. Right now DS#1 is 2.5 years old and DD is 15 months old. We are just starting to potty train DS#1, but aren't really rushing him. Both kids are still in cribs and I am so, so thankful for this. We feel that purchasing a 3rd crib is unnecessary spending, but I really do not want to put DS#1 in a bed.

If I were you I would do everything I could think of to keep at least your 19 month old in a crib. My DS#1 went through a phase of climbing out of his crib. It took some trial and error and a bit of brainstorming, but we found a solution and he's been happily sleeping in his crib for several months since. The backside of his crib is very tall, so we flipped his crib around putting the short side against the wall. He's no longer able to climb out. :)

I think it's great that you will have help when baby #3 helps. We recently hired a nanny and one important factor was that she be available to help with our toddlers for six weeks after the baby is born.
