Sick Baby-Advice

DD has a fever of 101.8, is congested, and lethargic (just wants to lay on us and sleep).  Anyone dealt with these symptoms and what course of action did you take?  We gave her tylenol 1/2 an hour ago and are waiting on the pedi to call back, you ladies are just so smart I wanted to get your input too  Big Smile

  • you just gotta wait it out. Have you got the little noses saline MIST spray? It's in an aluminum can not a plastic bottle. It helps with the snot.

I don't have the mist, I have the plastic bottle.  I don't want to wait it out, I want my baby to feel better nnnoooowww (said in a whiny voice).

Anybody know how high the temperature can get before that by itself is a concern?

  • We called at 103 axillary, but I think it's 103 rectal where you start getting concern.

The tylenol is a good start, you can alternate that with advil/motrin.  (Because tylenol is every 6 hours and advil is every 4).  I also do a cool wet cloth to the back of the neck if your baby will tolerate it, and lots of liquid (breastmilk/formula).

I hope your baby feels better soon!

  • Definitely infant Advil every 4-6 hours (check dosage instructions). And make sure to keep hydrated. And lots of snuggles! I called the dr at 102 and they didn't deem it emergent. Babies can get higher fevers than adults (in general) without it being as serious. It sucks though.
July 20th, 2012: Never forget the day the fb douchebags tried so hard, but ultimately failed. Viva la October 2011! Yeah, I called you douchebags.

This although for us her auxiliary and rectal temp were the same. I have heard conflicting things but the most recent is under 101.9 isn't technically a fever and to try other things before meds unless they seem uncomfortable and need a pain reliever. A warm bath, skin to skin, cool wash cloth and alternating meds like POs said is all great advice. Watch his liquid intake because lethargy can also be from dehydration.

Is she making eye contact when she looks at you?

I believe tylenol is every 4 and Advil is every 6. I just dont want anyones LO to be dosed incorrectly. Correct me if I am wrong.

We were told every 6 for both so they're getting something every 3 hours.

  • She was making eye-contact when she was awake. She just wanted to lay on us and go to sleep, and she is usually a very active baby. Her fever was down to 100.4 right before she went to sleep, and she vomited right before she fell asleep. It seems like she has been sick every week since she started daycare and I am about over it.
